Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Sirimon Reutrakul, MD (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This question and answer format book provides a comprehensive overview of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Purpose: The purpose is to emphasize the magnitude of healthcare problems due to diabetes, and to provide an understanding of its pathophysiology, treatments, and complications. As the incidence of diabetes is rising, this book will be another tool in helping primary care physicians deal with the problem since endocrinologists only see a small fraction of patients.
Audience: The book is designed for general practitioners, residents, and medical students. The content is easy to understand yet provides a comprehensive overview and is appropriate for such an audience. The authors are well recognized in the field of diabetes.
Features: The book points out the magnitude of this problem worldwide. It also covers risk factors, pathophysiology, and how to make the diagnosis. Various treatments are outlined. Micro- and macrovascular complication and diabetes emergencies together with the common comorbidities and treatments are discussed. The concisely written question and answer format makes the book easy to follow. Key words and important phrases are highlighted in shaded blue boxes which help readers quickly get the message. The chapters on diet and exercise provide short and practical guidelines for physicians to use in recommendations for their patients. All of these features serve the authors' purpose of providing a basic, up-to-date guideline rather than a textbook. Since the knowledge in this field is rapidly growing, readers should be aware of additional information since the book was published, especially regarding treatment. I also think that the coverage on insulin treatment is relatively short.
Assessment: Overall, this book serves as a handy, quick and comprehensive consultant for physicians treating patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
