Meet the Author

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), born the son of a noble Polish family as Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, rechristened himself with his pen name. He became one of the greatest prose stylists and novelists in the English language. A precursor to modernist literature, he mined his experiences in the French and British navies to create tragic tales that simultaneously delve into worldwide issues and the individual soul.

    Great sea tale

This story has everything: character who jump off the page, clearer than life, and the best description of a ship and her crew enduring a terrific storm. My favorite Conrad.

An exciting tale of human nature

Conrad's masterpiece chronicles the doomed voyage of a steamer in the Indian ocean. It is full of excitement and danger, but is most successful in its portrayal of the personalities and struggles of the captain and his mate. Of all of Conrad's works, this is my favorite.

Without modern weather equipment the Capt quickly scanned the useless Sea Manuals

The Capt could not change his course, once open it so he concentrated on the only option left to help the situation, to make safe the the remaining Chinamen. A short, short story of little interest.

Three cats padded in, two toms and one she. "We would like to join." The she, her pelt snowy white except for a golden star-like marking on her chest, purred. A snowy white tom behind her nodded. "I am Fallensnow. These are my friends, Goldensoar and her brother Nightflame." Nightflame, a pure black tom, smiled. "We heard you needed a deputy, too..."
