Excerpt from Typographia, or the Printer's Instructor: A Brief Sketch of the Origin, Rise, and Progress of the Typographic Art

In presenting another edition of our Work for public favor, we cannot forego the opportunity of acknowledging our obligations to the Profession, for the very liberal and flattering testimonials of their approbation heretofore extended us, as well as to those who have taken so warm an interest in the appearance of the present edition.

Very many of the works heretofore published on this subject, in a practical point of view, have been little else than reprints of old Grammars, chiefly of Smith's, published in London, 1755; although we have in many instances adopted the language of our predecessors, still we have in general not only compressed the information contained in it, but have in all cases made it subservient to our own views and experience.

Among the numerous additions which have been made, and which now appear in print for the first time, we would direct attention particularly to the articles on Gold, Bronze, Card and Xylographic printing, and last, though not least in importance, the printing of Wood Engravings, a branch which when properly executed is eminently calculated to elevate the art in public estimation, and to secure for the best productions extensive patronage as works of Art. Until recently but little attention has been bestowed upon it in this country, and as the attention of the profession has now been turned to it, we have thought proper to make our observations on the subject full and comprehensible.

The Literati, and in fact every one in any way connected with the publishing and printing business, will find suitable directions for their guidance in preparing copy, making calculations, correction, &c &c.
