Overview

Supermodel, author, businesswoman, and talk show host . . . what's next? Tyra Banks started knocking down barriers early in her career. She was the first black model to appear on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and the first woman ever to appear on the cover of GQ. As a model, Tyra challenged weight discrimination by marketing her curves instead of hiding them. She works hard to promote positive self-images for young women of all races and body types, all while running her own successful corporation.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - L. A. Gallaway
This biography of Tyra Banks begins with a dramatic scene in which Tyra is ridiculed publicly for her weight. She reacts, not with concern for herself, but with concern for her young fans. She worries that they will internalize this criticism and that it will contribute to the erosion of their self-esteem. As a result, Tyra initiates TZONE (Tyra Zone) Foundation, which supports the emotional growth of economically disadvantaged girls. With this, the book sets off to show Tyra's emotional growth from her awkward teenage years to her self-confident adulthood. She develops her own self-esteem through successful modeling and talk show careers, but she never forgets the challenges she faced through her adolescence. This prompts her to support others not only through her talk show but through philanthropy as well. This book is filled with full-color photographs throughout that will appeal to young readers. The text is broken into three to four page sections that are punctuated with illustrations and sidebars. It includes a timeline of her life, a glossary, source notes, a selected bibliography, suggestions for further reading and an index. Reviewer: L. A. Gallaway
