Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Read about Tyrannosaurus Rex, a large, fierce dinosaur with sharp teeth. Most of the layouts have a picture along with one to three sentences with general descriptions about the physical features and characteristics of this meat-eating dinosaur. Children may need guidance with their comprehension of the content such as the inference of long sharp teeth and speed of movement. The illustrations do not include labels or arrows to direct the readers' attention to the description; however, the pictorial glossary has arrows that point to the legs and tail. In the second chapter, a pictorial chart and text compare this creature to the length of a bus and weight of an elephant; concrete activities may be needed to comprehend the actual size beyond the abstract level of words in the book. For those children who wish to learn more about dinosaurs, check out the two web sites; the sites are on different pages after the main text. This book is one of six in the "Rookie Read-About Dinosaurs" series. The books follow a similar format which provides learning opportunities to compare the size, movement, or skeletal structures of the different dinosaurs. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
