Overview

House-y, tech-y, trance-y open-ended electronic dance music that refuses to be classified as anything other than funky. As residents of London megaclub Fabric, Craig Richards and Lee Burridge quickly advanced to superstar DJ status. But far from simply being well-marketed, these partners made their mark by capturing the best elements of many oft-segregated genres and blending them into an exotic high-end meal for dancers. One crafty U.K. journalist has called it "Sushi Breaks." It is, in fact, the point in the road where adventurous trance DJs such as John Digweed meet with forward-looking house jocks Danny Tenaglia and Deep Dish. If Tyrant has created its own electronic subgenre, it should be called "post-subgenre." But that sounds really bad. The two discs in this set are not delineated by either DJ, implying that this is a collaborative effort. And judging from the way each track pushes its predecessor; it's easy to imagine these two blokes standing next to each other at the decks, impatiently waiting to outdo the other with each consecutive mix. The body-locking breaks of "I Get Live" give way to dark, driving atmospherics on "Cereal Killer" before releasing with the euphoric catchy melodies of "Ecstatic." And that's merely one 15-minute segment out of a two-and-a-half hour set. Expertly assembled by two DJs who have not yet been corrupted by the insidious game that is dance music, Tyrant is a mix that will retain its credibility long after another subgenre appears on the electronic landscape.
