Some of you may look at me and think, That girl's never had an insecure day in her life. Well, I think my experiences will prove that you can't always judge a book by its cover (not even this one). I've struggled with chronic warts, poor body image and one too many broken hearts on the road to supermodel status. And I know all about pressure we're put under to be perfect. That's why I wrote this book. Between the life lessons I've learned and the practical tips I've added from my friends in the fashion biz, this book will show you how to look and feel beautiful — inside and out.

Skin: How to get and keep that skin of yours glowing, from sun care to zit-zappers, from body art to body piercing.

Makeup: From keeping it real and natural to taking a walk on the wild side.

Hair: The Lowdown on dyes, cuts and styles, from waves to weaves.

Health: Working out, eating right and dealing with days when you're too pooped to pump iron.

Fashion: Stylin' and profilin', from hot trends to classic chic, designer habits to great fakes.

Alcohol and Drugs: On kicking bad habits, avoiding temptation and the path to reaching a natural high.

Relationships: Straight talk from girls' hearts and souls on good love, bad breakups and making a love connection that lasts.

Self-loving: Learning to accept the fool in you, as well as the part that got it goin' on.

VOYA - Debby Adams
Speaking to middle and high school girls, this beauty book is a step beyond Cindy Crawford's Basic Face (Broadway Books, 1996) and gives advice about being attractive inside as well as outside. Banks wrote this book to answer the many questions her fans ask in their letters, not only about how to apply lipstick, but also how to create and maintain healthy relationships with boys, family, and friends. Brightly colored graphics and fashion magazine photography and layout techniques are used throughout the book, making it fun to flip through and read from random sections as well as cover to cover. Included are instructions on makeup, skin care, and hairstyling techniques, with an emphasis on healthy eating and exercise as the ultimate beauty enhancers. Detailing the topics of drugs, alcohol, dating, and sex, Banks shares her own experiences as well as those of a focus group of girls who made varying decisions when facing teen pressures. Banks does not draw conclusions, but lets the girls' comments stand on their own. Banks also discusses her family's important role as her support group, her friendships, and being true to herself. She suggests helping others as a way to overcome the blues, and relates her work with AIDS and children's charities as well as the scholarship fund she established at her former high school. Banks provides no new revelations in her book, but fans that won't read anything else might pick up some healthy habits here to replace self-defeating ones. In particular, Banks's strong relationship with her mother (they fight, but love each other fiercely) and her commitment to quiet time and keeping a journal are two techniques any girl could adopt to navigate teen waters with a lot less struggle. Recommended for all YA collections. Photos. Charts. VOYA Codes: 4Q 4P M J S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, Broad general YA appeal, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).

YA-A successful model tells all in this readable self-help book. By sharing the beauty secrets she has learned from experts, Banks gives practical advice on skin care, cosmetics, hair, exercise, and fashion. She also addresses serious subjects such as substance abuse, romantic relationships, sexual concerns, and being a complete person. Jammed with full-color photographs and a variety of page layouts and type fonts, this glitzy book looks like a popular magazine (without the advertisements) just begging teenagers to pick it up. Interest is maintained through the breezy writing style that includes phrases such as, "I thought I was so smart...," diary entries, funny family stories, and before-and-after photographs. Since most of the photos are of Banks, one might be tempted to say that the book is aimed at African-American young women, but there are tons of hints and useful information for those of any racial or ethnic background. A wonderful choice for today's beauty-seeking teens.-Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA
