Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-- An account of German submarine warfare in World War II that is surprisingly complete and always interesting. The art of illustrating nonfiction for young readers is well-demonstrated here; full-color sketches show action scenes, while cut-away drawings clearly and correctly depict the interior of the U-boat. Interspersed with the drawings are fascinating photographs from the Imperial War Museum. The text vividly describes the cramped, damp, and hungry existence of the crews; the foes of the U-boat; the fury of the North Atlantic; and, ultimately, the defeat of the U-boats. An attractive and engrossing book, this may pique older readers enough to attempt the more challenging books in the ``Seafarers'' series (Time-Life). --Don Reaber, Meadowdale High School, Lynnwood, WA
