U. S. Amphibious Ships and Craft: An Illustrated Design History

( 3 )

Overview

As in earlier volumes in the series, this study sheds light on past decisions by presenting previously unpublished documents that illustrate not only what was actually built but also what was planned and never brought into service. For example, this book offers the first comprehensive and fully illustrated account of abortive attempts in the 1960s and beyond to build new fire support ships (LFSs). With nearly three hundred photographs and specially commissioned line drawings and extensive appendixes, this work ...

    I Also Recommend:

    Another winner!

Dr. Friedman has made a name for himself in the ship design history field that few others have even come close to matching. His volume on amphibious ships continues to deliver. His straightforward and easily comprehensible prose takes what could be a dry, technical textbook of naval information, statistics and jargon and turns it into something that both the laymen and the experts can enjoy.
Like previous books in this series, it is not an operational history or catalog of events, but there are enough factual examples in each chapter that you can see the events passing behind and influencing the technical developments.
All in all a very satisfying read for anyone interested in the subject matter.

An excellent addition to a fascinating series

I just received Mr. Friedman's volume on amphibious ships and in just skimming through it I have learned a great deal of interesting details on the theory and practice of the designs of these important assets to our national defense. As with his other books in this series, the author includes many high resolution photographs and line drawings of ships in the fleet as well as cross-sections of the various ships proposed throughout the years. THIS BOOK IS A MUST for Navy and Marine enthusiasts.
