Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Mary Ann Wendland, BS (Creighton University School of Medicine)
Description: This is an up-to-date, annotated bibliography of healthcare law and policy literature that focuses on an evaluation of available materials on current health structure and the legal issues that pertain to them.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive listing of available current literature in the healthcare law and policy field. These are worthwhile objectives; a thorough, annotated bibliography provides users with an important research tool to aid in finding useful information quickly. The book meets the author's goal because it provides an extensive listing of the literature available.
Audience: The target audience is healthcare administrators, benefit managers, attorneys, physicians, medical directors, medical students, and the public at large. Information useful to all groups is included. This author has excellent credentials in the field of health law. He belongs to credible health law organizations and has written a law book for physicians.
Features: A complete listing of the literature available in the area of health law and policy is provided. Each listing includes publication information and a brief review of the citation. The most useful aspect of this book is its comprehensiveness. Sources include books, journals, and web sites. An extensive glossary, list of acronyms and abbreviations, and state-by-state guides to medical records and statutes of limitations are also included.
Assessment: The author has done an excellent job of providing a useful, easy-to-use, comprehensive guide to health law and policy in the U.S. I couldn't find another book that compares in any way to this one. Subjects as diverse as tax issues and privacy are covered. The majority of citations are from literature no later than 1990. Although the citations are brief, they give an excellent synopsis of the content of each citation. This second edition is necessary because health law has experienced so much change.
