Overview

Updated through the 2012 Olympics.

On a July afternoon in 1999, the proudest moment for U.S. soccer occurred in Pasadena, California. In the presence of more than 90,000 fans and viewed by another 40 million on television, the U.S. women outlasted China to win the World Cup. Although the United States has lagged far behind other countries in the men's game, it has been at the forefront when it comes to women's soccer.

In the second edition of The U.S. Women's Soccer Team: An American Success Story, Clemente A. Lisi examines how the sport has gained popularity over the past few decades. While other books have been written about the team during a specific year, such as those focused solely on the World Cup win on U.S. soil, Lisi looks beyond this event, detailing the program's infancy and how it steadily became a model for women's teams around the globe.

Beginning with the start of the U.S. program in 1985, Lisi recounts the development of the women's team, highlighted by their two first place finishes in the Women's World Cups (1991 and 1999) and four Olympic women's gold medals (1996, 2004, 2008, and 2012). In addition to chronicling the history of the team as a whole, this book offers mini profiles and photographs of some of the best players over the years, including Julie Foudy, Amy Rodriguez, Hope Solo, and Mia Hamm.

Editorial Reviews

International Soccer Network
PRAISE FOR A PREVIOUS EDITION
The text is an easy read with lots of information....Overall . . . a splendid book that you can get through in just a few days. It is a great history of the women’s program and the special people that made it what it is today.
Library Journal
This comprehensive history follows U.S. women's soccer from its inception in 1985 to World Cup and Olympic success. Indeed, two World Cups (1991, 1999) and three Olympic golds (1996, 2004, 2008) make for a considerable accomplishment. Lisi (New York Post; A History of the World Cup, 1930–2006) details the development of women's soccer in a lively text interrupted only by brief player profiles. Fifteen pages of match results and statistics conclude the volume. This readable text is recommended for soccer fans and academic collections with an emphasis on sports.

    A Journey Through Time

I began following the U.S. Women's Soccer Team in 2008, shortly before they would go to the Beijing Olympics and win Gold. From that point on, I became a die-hard fan of the team and its players. I had only heard of the team's previous successes, and in the hopes of learning more, I got this book. As soon as I started reading it, I was hooked. The author gives the reader an inside look at the team through all of its glory, and even its most difficult and heart-breaking moments. This book takes you on a journey with the US Women's Soccer Team, from the program's inception in 1985, through to its 2008 Olympics triumph. But its not all just cold hard facts. Clemente A. Lisi takes you through all of the issues the team has had to deal with throughout its history. At the end of the book, you feel like you have experienced the entire journey of the team; felt its happiness, and its heartbreak. Not only does the author give you a look at the team as a whole, but he also gives tons of information on players and coaches, often times incorporating quotes from many of them, giving the book a personal feel to it. Instead of it being a boring, plain, and strictly factual book recounting the teams history, its told as a story, giving you an inside look at the team, while chronicling its successes and hardships. As an added bonus, there is an entire back section chock full of facts, listing every game the USA has played accompanied by the scores, along with the Team's All-Time leaders in categories ranging from Goals to CAPS. I highly recommend this book to any die-hard fan of the U.S Women's Soccer Team. And even if you aren't a fan, I guarantee that you will become one after you read about this inspirational team who achieved success through a history of ups and downs.
