Meet the Author

Jonathan Oxer is the founder and technical director of Internet Vision Technologies in Australia, as well as the past president of Linux Australia, the national organization for Linux users, developers, and vendors.

Kyle Rankin is a system administrator who enjoys troubleshooting, problem solving, and system recovery. He is also the author of Knoppix Hacks, Knoppix Pocket Reference, Linux Multimedia Hacks, and Ubuntu Hacks for O'Reilly Media. He has been using Linux in many different forms since 1998, and has used live CDs to demo Linux and troubleshoot machines — from DemoLinux to the LinuxCare bootable toolbox to Knoppix.

Bill Childers is Director of Enterprise Systems for Quinstreet, Inc. He's been working with Linux and Unix since before it was cool, and previously worked for Sun Microsystems and Set Engineering.

    VERY VETRY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

    Do you need to install and test-drive Ubuntu Linux? If you do, then this book is for you. Authors Jonathan Oxer, Kyle Rankin and Bill Childers, have done an outstanding job of writing a cool book that meets the needs of the novice, intermediate, and experienced users in a wide variety of ways. Oxer, Rankin and Childers, begin by showing you how to get started with Ubuntu. Then, the authors help you get the most out of the GNOME and KDE desktop environments for Linux. Next, the authors show you how to play nearly any kind of audio and video, and burn files, music, and movies to optical discs. They also show you how to get going with various wireless cards. The authors continue by showing you how to tweak X11. Then, they show you how to work with packages. Next, the authors show you how to tighten up security on your system. They then show you how to run Ubuntu inside of other operating systems, and other operating systems inside of Ubuntu. Finally, the authors show you how to do a basic server install to installing network services such as DNS, mail, Apache, and more. The hacks in this most excellent book cover the essential areas of Ubuntu. Perhaps more importantly, they¿ll help you maximize your use of the distro!
