Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
Strange visitors from outer space have been reported for centuries. They are thought to explain monumental building sites and graphics etched in the earth from thousands of years ago. Has the earth been visited from worlds light years beyond this planet? Have humans been abducted and taken aboard space ships, studied, and used for experiments, as has been reported by supposed victims? Incidents and evidence from across the ages are presented in concise language and clearly written examples. The high-interest format includes color photographs and graphics that clarify and expand the information on each page. Sidebars titled "Mystery Moment," "At-A-Glance Aliens," "Eye Witness," and "What's the Proof?" add research and scientific information as well as eye witness reports. The book concludes with a glossary, index and list of Internet resources labeled "Web Finder." This book, one of the "Amazing Mysteries" series, would be a good addition to an elementary or middle school science classroom or library. Reviewer: Hazel Buys

Gr 5-7–This series presents a wide range of phenomena in a colorful, easy-to-browse format that will appeal to readers of all abilities. Each oversize volume is chock-full of some of the greatest enigmas from the past to the present, ranging from the Egyptian pyramids to UFOs. The brief texts are enticing, but are not substantial enough for research and provides no documentation or further-reading suggestions. The layout and use of visuals are extremely appealing even though it is not always clear whether the images depict the phenomenon being discussed. If you’re looking to entice reluctant readers, these books will do the job, but pair them with more substantial works to encourage children to dig deeper.
