Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Suanne Roush
Haunted: Ghosts and the Paranormal is a four-volume series investigating ghosts, UFOs, paranormal encounters, and the incident at Roswell. Unlike most books dealing with these subjects, which tend to be brief, this series is reminiscent of the books in Rosen's UXL line: more academic and less for the casual or reluctant reader. All of the four are arranged with a preface, introduction, conclusion, glossary, more information, further reading, bibliography and index, and all have black and white photographs, except Famous Ghost Stories which has black-and-white illustrations. In this title, aspects of the ghost stories are explained with their ties to various countries and versions. It could be used in a class that is studying urban legends, since there is a section on "the hitchhiker," or during a unit on scary stories. This title, as well as Paranormal Encounter, have the widest appeal. The volumes on Roswell and UFOs, more academic in nature, are going to appeal only to students with a strong interest in, or who are doing projects about, the subject. Both volumes, but especially the one on UFOs, are slanted toward believers; both sides of the topic are not presented. This makes that volume especially interesting, from the preface, written by both an astronaut and a scientist, through the conclusion. The goal is to break through the "traditionalist" viewpoint that UFOs do not exist, in spite of evidence to the contrary. What makes this volume refreshing also makes it potentially controversial. This set should be purchased where there is interest in the subject beyond the superficial. (Haunted: Ghosts and the Paranormal) Reviewer: Suanne Roush
