Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Ugh , the title character of Yorinks' and Egielski's latest picture book, is a cave boy whose older siblings make him do all the cave work. In his spare time Ugh invents the bicycle and, in a sequence of comic events, becomes king of the world. Ugh has all the familiar trappings of the collaborators' earlier works: a witty, colloquial text and broad, colorful illustrations. While Yorinks's story is not quite as imaginative as either Louis the Fish or It Happened in Pinsk , and while Egielski's pictures are not quite as colorful or exuberant as those in Caldecott Medal-winning Hey Al! , Ugh is funny enough, attractive enough and entertaining enough to please the many fans of this gifted duo. Ages 3-up. (Sept.)
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-- Life for cave boy Ugh is miserable. He must work day and night scrubbing and slaving while his brothers and sisters have fun in the grove watching dinosaurs eat trees. But Ugh likes to make things, and he knows he will be a ``big shot'' someday. That day comes when he makes a bicycle and is declared king. In consternation, his brothers and sisters, after failing to steal the credit for the bicycle, throw themselves in the ocean and are eaten by a whale. Despite humorous intent, the story falls flat. It is too thin, and the use of what sounds like pidgin English to indicate a primitive peoples' language is misplaced and may be viewed, by some, as offensive. The cartoon-style illustrations, with their backgrounds of weird, prehistoric-looking plants, contain many humorous touches. The cover illustration showing a yellow Tyrannosaurus Rex striding after Ugh as he pedals his stone bicycle will attract children's attention, but the story is a disappointment. --Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY
