Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Candice Ransom
Someone once said that primary school children think underpants is the funniest word ever. The wildly popular series "Captain Underpants" bears witness to that fact. A chapter book titled Underpants on My Head cannot fail. In this follow-up to Uh-oh, Cleo, author Harper continues the antics of the Small family. With six children and a dog, the family is hardly small. Cleo narrates their vacation to Colorado starting with the logistical difficulties of flying with six kids, including window-seat fights and thrown toys. "Boss of the World" Jenna, the oldest, claims the best bed at Gram's house and the most glamorous chores. The Little Three stay behind at Gram's while The Big Three set off to climb Mount Baldy with their parents. Cleo's observations remain true to her eight-year-old self. As she eats her Cheerios, she thinks, "I ate slowly, watching the little circles, all lazy in the milk. They were on vacation, happy as can be. No hiking for them today." The summer hike brought a huge surprise, a blizzard! The kids wear the extra underpants they carried in their backpacks on their heads. When Jenna falls, Cleo bosses her for a change to keep her moving. Breezily written with honest, likeable characters, this book will be a winner with the chapter book set. Reviewer: Candice Ransom

Gr 2-3

Eight-year-old Cleo Small and her family, first introduced in Uh-oh, Cleo (Putnam, 2008), are vacationing in Colorado. Since the family has six kids, the trip is understandably full of chaos and typical sibling squabbles. Upon arriving at Grandma's house, Cleo, her two oldest siblings, and their parents depart to climb Mount Baldy. A freak snowstorm at the top leads them to use their spare undergarments as hats, and the siblings find they have to work together to make it down safely. Cleo's chatty narration and Berkeley's warm black-and-white illustrations will appeal to early chapter-book readers. Although the action is a little late in getting started, the opening sentence ("Two things you hardly ever see are snow in summer and underpants on my head") easily sells the book. Reading the first title isn't necessary, though it may help youngsters to make sense of Cleo's large family. Sure to be in demand where Uh-oh, Cleo is popular.-Jackie Partch, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR

Kirkus Reviews
Cleo Small tells the hilarious story (based on the author's real life) of her five siblings, two parents and a mountain hike on Mount Baldy. Readers with siblings will smile and nod with recognition as the large Small family negotiates the details of their family vacation. When Cleo and the other two older kids leave to have a few days alone with their parents in a mountain cabin, Cleo details the all-too-familiar car-trip arguments which culminate in bold Dad-words, "Okay, knock. It. Off." The hike begins with the family swimming in a stream in their underpants and ends with the spare sets of underpants finding a new purpose-warming heads. Berkeley's occasional black-and-white illustrations add to the humor-especially the two underwear scenes. Generous white space and a large typeface make this an inviting read for the new reader; playful changes in font add to the zest of Cleo's narration. At the end, Cleo decides to turn this episode into fodder for in-class writing, and young writers will want to mine their family memories for stories of their own. (Fiction. 6-8)

    Very Cute Book!

This book was a great read to me. This family reminds me of a family that I longed for when I was growing up. The family is very large, but also very close. Cleo Small, her parents and her 5 brothers and sisters are hilarious to read about. Every task turns into a huge project. A plane ride, a car ride, a hike up into the mountains, you name it. With six children I couldn't imagine it being any different. I love reading cute stories with happy endings that will allow me to dream about the funny stories I will soon be telling about my children. Underpants on my head is also the perfect title for the book. This family uses what they have in the times of need. Underpants act as boggins when they are caught in a snow storm in the middle of August. It could've turned into a horrible situation without any humor, but the Small family wouldn't allow that to happen. I would definitely recommend this book to children ages 7-9.
