Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publishers Weekly
One clumsy kid stars in Uh-Oh! by Marion Dane Bauer, illus. by Valeria Petrone. "I've got a balloon,/ so round and red./ I'll toss it / up till it's/ over my..." Astute readers might expect to find a rhyme; instead, a lift of a flap reveals the eponymous refrain ("Uh-oh!") as the freckle-faced heroine finds her balloon has burst (but the image shows it's indeed over her "head").
Children's Literature
The young girl in this lift-the-flap book moves from one mishap to another. She bursts her balloon, looses her kite, falls down and even spills her milk. None of these accidents seem to get her very upset. The mishaps then move into categories that are more akin to breaking rules and creating more than an Uh-oh as a response. She tears a page in one of Dad's rare books, wakes the sleeping baby, falls off a chair as she climbs up to reach something in the closet and then breaks a lamp. There seem to be no consequences or parental intervention for these actions, which in this reviewer's opinion, sends the wrong message. The behavior deserves more than an Uh-Oh! Perhaps even a time-out and a lesson in listening to ones parents is in order. Not a book that would be recommended by this reviewer. 2002, Little Simon,
