It was early afternoon. Ken Ichijoji, boy genius, hunched over his computer, typing furiously. Tap. Tap. Tap. "Let's seejust a few simple modifications," he said. Up sprang yellow eye goggles on the screen. "Perfect," he shouted, and laughed menacingly.
In another part of town, school had just ended. "The classroom is empty," Patamon whispered. The little Digimon looked around. "I think it's safe to come out now."
"Hold on, I'm still taking the spelling test," Gatomon said with a sheepish smile. She looked like a fuzzy white cat with green and red claws.
Her Digimon friends, DemiVeemon and Poromon, giggled.
Some strange noises echoed down the hallway. Thump, thump, thump. It sounded like humans. "Shh!" whispered Patamon. "I hear someone coming."
A strangre-shaped head with spiky hair formed a silhouette in the doorway. DemiVeemon sniffed. "It smells like Davis," he said.
The door opened, and Davis, Kari, and T.K. appeared. As usual, Davis was wearing his trademark blue goggles. "Are you saying I stink?" the boy asked.
"It is Davis," squealed DemiVeemon happily as he jumped into Davis's arms.
Davis laughed as he picked up the small blue Digimon. He was still amazed at the new Digital World that he and his friends had just been introduced to. It was filled with these cool little creatures who could "digivolve" into giant monsters with the help of their humans' tiny digital devices.
But Davis knew that it was a world filled with danger, too. Just recently, he and Veemon, the Rookie form of DemiVeemon, had been captured by the evil Digimon Emperor. If it hadn't beenfor some serious digivolving, he and DemiVeemon might still be trapped there, or worse.
"Did you guys have a good day at school?" Davis joked to DemiVeemon. The Digimon nodded.
"Where's Yolei?" asked Poromon, flapping her pink wings. Poromon was a little round Digimon with big blue eyes and a yellow beak. She missed her human partner, Yolei, already. It had been a long first day for her inthis strange new world. The Digimon had followed their human friends out of DigiWorld so that they'd be safe from the Digimon Emperor.
"Yeah, and Cody Hida, too?" asked Upamon hopefully. Like Poromon, he was a round little Digimon. He had wings, too, but he didn't fly. He just bounced.
Kari laughed. "Don't worry, they're both on their way over," she said reassuringly.
Yolei came running in. She was carrying a big white bag. "Sorry I'm late. I brought goodies from my family's convenience store."
T.K. smiled. "Good idea, Yolei. In-Training Digimon are bottomless pits."
The little Digimon looked curiously at the contents of the bag. "Can we eat it?" asked Poromon. "I'm hungry."
"Of course, you can eat it. Watch me," said Patamon. He looked like a mouse with wings. He grabbed a juice box andbegan to drink. Slurp, slurp. A few seconds later, the juice box was empty.
"The buffet is now open!" cried Upamon as he jumped happily into the bag and started eating. "Delicious! This is the best thing I've ever eaten in my whole life, even though I'm only two days old!" Upamon joyfully bounced around in the bag.
All the other Digimon dived in, except Gatomon. Her furry face crinkled in distaste. She couldn't believe their bad manners. "I hopemy first litter doesn't act like this," she said disapprovingly.
"C'mon," Davis said. "Let's check to see if the Digital Gate is open."
Yolei led the way to a computer and started typing. The screen clicked on, showing the digital device that would open up their portal to DigiWorld. "It's open!" she cried. "Perfecto!"
"Great," cried Davis. "Let's go to the Digital World!"
"Wait a minute, guys," said Kari. "We can't leave yet. Cody's not here."
Davis was impatient. "What's taking him so long?" he asked.
"He's still in the lunchroom," said Yolei. "Last time I checked, he was still chewing the same carrot fifty times." This was a habit Cody had developed ever since his father had died. He was often sad and spent a lot of time by himself.
"C'mon," Yolei said. "Let's watch some TV to pass the time." Click.
A reporter's voice alerted the viewers. "We interrupt Power Rangers to bring you this latest story. The results of the national computer programming contest were just announced, and the winner is boy genius Ken Ichijoji."
Ken appeared on the TV screen. "There were many well-deserving geniuses out there," he said modestly, "and I am humbled to think that the judges chose me to receive the top prize." A reporter chimed in, detailing all of Ken's impressive achievements. He was a champion chess player, judo expert, and star soccer player.
"Wow," said Davis. "He's almost as good as me."
The kids were so busy watching television that they didn't notice Cody come in. "I heard this kid is so smart that one time he gave his teachers homework," he said quietly.
"Cody!" Kari exclaimed. "When did you get here?"
"About a minute ago," be said,
"Hey, maybe Ken knows how to defeat the Digimon Emperor," T.K. suggested.
"Hmph!" Yolei sniffed and turned Off the television. "I know more about the Digital World than that stupid kid," she said, crossing her arms.
"He may be stupid, but he's still a genius," Davis said.
By now the Digimon had finished munching everything that Yolei had brought. "We're ready to go back to the Digital World now," said Patamon brightly.
"All present and accounted for," T.K. shouted happily. "Let's get going!"
Davis held up his digivice. "Next stop, the Digital World! he announced.
