All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Following in the footsteps of other installments in Arista's Ultimate series, Ultimate Broadway is an excellent sampler of some of the greatest songs and performances in the history of the Great White Way. Almost all of the 40 songs on the two discs in this collection are performed by the original Broadway casts, which makes it an excellent choice for casual fans. The Judy Collins and Aretha Franklin covers do sound a little out of place, but those are only two numbers on a generous compilation filled with great moments. The set runs from Oklahoma! to Rent, hitting such seminal performances as Carol Channing's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," Gertrude ...

It may not be a definitive show tune collection, but it's certainly tremendously entertaining.

Why was this song on there?

There were a lot of really obscure songs on there. Like why put "One" on there instead of "What I did for love" and "Rich Man" instead of "Tradition". There were alot of things like that. Also the Aretha Franklin version of Les Mis took it down a whole rating.

    ehh (shrug)...It was ok

I was excited the first time that I listened to it but it ended up being a let down. I feel like they came close on a lot of songs but really missed on some of the songs that would make it 'Ultimate.' Definitely not one of my favorites. It ended up being ok. I wished I had bought something else.

    A Great Buy

A Friend lent me this CD and i was amazed at how they got all of the great songs like "Seasons of Love" and "All That Jazz" onto one great CD.

Aretha Franklin doing Les Miz? PLEEEEEESE!

I love the entire album except for this one track......yuck! Glad I have a MPEG player so I can delete it, but it would have been nice to have a version recorded at least somewhat similar to the original.

This One Lives Up To It's Title...Almost

Packed with memorable showstoppers, including the new-to-me singing talent of Judy Holliday (on ''The Party's Over''), and superb John Cullum, the actor who played Dr Greene's dad on ''ER'', bringing down the house with ''On A Clear Day...''. Glaring omissions like a Diahann Carroll number from ''No Strings'' and the Bea Arthur/Angela Lansbury duet ''Bosom Buddies'' from ''Mame'' drop this down a notch for me. But I definitely recommend it. So much glorious singing!
