Overview

The Ultimate Collection might more properly be called The Early Mahalia Jackson, since it consists of some of the gospel singer's first recorded performances. Prism Leisure, which released the album, is a British budget label that specializes in taking advantage of the 50-year copyright limit on recordings in Europe to construct collections of the work of prominent vintage performers transferred from records, paying no licensing fees in the process. Here, the company collects tracks cut by Jackson for Decca and Apollo Records up to the arbitrary cutoff date of 1949. That is all the good in Jackson's case, however, since her work of the 1950s and beyond veered into a more commercial direction, unlike the more traditional recordings of the '30s and '40s. The album lacks any annotations beyond a general two-page biography, and it mixes up the tracks in random order. But it includes both sides of Jackson's two Decca singles of 1937, "Oh My Lord"/"God Shall Wipe All Tears Away" (catalog number 7321) and "Keep Me Every Day"/"God's Gonna Separate the Wheat from the Tares" (7341), as well as some of her most important early Apollo discs from 1946 on, among them "I Want to Rest" (145), "Move on Up a Little Higher" (164), and "Dig a Little Deeper" (181). Accompanied often only by a piano (with an organ sometimes joining in), Jackson fills up the sound picture with her powerful, fervent voice. As a collection, this album lacks the kind of coherence and context one hopes for in a compilation, but musically it has the goods.
