Overview

Quick, who's the only woman to play with both the Beach Boys and Pink Floyd? Yup, Toni Tennille, who toured with the surf kings and sang backup on The Wall. Pretty hip for a woman who was a member of one of the '70s' hokiest acts. But that's the thing about Captain & Tennille: Their goofy image -- thanks to Darryl "The Captain" Dragon's sailor caps, silly keyboard sounds, and a vanilla TV variety show -- has always undercut their solid music. This Ultimate Collection reminds us that they made some brilliant singles, starting with the irresistibly bouncy "Love Will Keep Us Together," which has soulful vocal and manic keyboard flourishes that belie the duo's white-bread rep. The same goes for Tennille's lusty and lush "The Way I Want to Touch You," which may be the best song Dionne Warwick and Carole King never sang. The liner notes of this disc also give the world the official party line on "Muskrat Love," one of the silliest ballads to ever crack the Billboard Top 40 ("I said to Darryl, 'This song's hysterical, why don't we add to our club-act?' "). True, the domesticated duo gave us the definitive version of "The Wedding Song (There Is Love)," a matrimonial standard by Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul & Mary) that has become something of a cliché. But with lite-delights like "You Never Done It Like That" and "Do That to Me One More Time," Captain & Tennille deserve to be remembered for what they really were: two of AM radio's top blue-eyed soulsters.

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Hip-O's Ultimate Collection: The Complete Hits will likely be too much music for most audiences, simply because most listeners don't remember much more than "Love Will Keep Us Together," "Muskrat Love," and "Do That to Me One More Time" from Captain & Tennille. They actually had many more hits than that -- 11 more, four of which hit the Top Ten, actually (for the record, they are "The Way I Want to Touch You," "Lonely Night (Angel Face)," "Shop Around," and "You Never Done It Like That"). All of them are here, along with several other singles and album tracks on this generous 22-track collection. To be frank, Captain & Tennille weren't quite varied or deep enough to make this collection not lose steam toward the middle, but the highlights -- the three Neil Sedaka-penned tunes ("Love Will Keep Us Together," "Lonely Night (Angel Face)," "You Never Done It Like That,") plus "Do That to Me One More Time" -- are all very good, standing proudly amongst soft rock hits of the time. Still, all of these can be better heard on a more concise collection, since a shorter running time makes Captain & Tennille sound like more consistent hitmakers. Although some listeners will prefer to have this more thorough overview, the number of tracks on Ultimate Collection reveals that the duo could only occasionally put it across the plate.

This is pure, unadulterated pop music. And, oh what fun! I remember hearing the Captain and Tennille back when I was growing up. And just recently I was reminded of their music. So I looked them up and found this recording. Nothing fancy. Just great music that makes you feel good. Love Will Keep Us Together has to be one of my all-time favorites. I could listen to C&T's version over and over again for quite some time. But there are many other great songs. And what really blew me away while listening was what an incredible voice Toni has. Something that I had never recognized before. This disc is highly recommended for those looking for a wonderful review of Captain and Tennille's music.

Wow. This CD has been out for awhile and I just discovered it at B&N Booksellers today - in 2010! What a spectacular find, I must add. I grew up in the 1970s and 80s and remembering my mother playing Captain and Tennille every morning before school and on Sunday afternoons, along with great music from Helen Reddy, Olivia Newton John and Linda Ronstadt, among countless other top performing artists of the day. There was always something very special about Toni's gutsy voice and the couple's choice of memorable songs. Naturally, I was thrilled to buy a copy of this outstanding CD collection for my aging parents and one for myself. Every song brings back fond memories and not such good ones - but issues associated with youth that the sounds of C&T and Helen Reddy, especially, helped me cope through and come to terms. This CD is for fans and anyone from any era wanting to hear pitch perfect music and a wide array of selections to liven one's spirits. A real winner to be had by all. Nothing offensive. How refreshing!

The Captain & Tennille's music got me through some tough times growing up, and I still love their music today. I have to admit that I haven't listened to them in several years, but these songs sure bring back memories. I remember seeing them in concert as a youth, and being thrilled out of my mind. The albums I had of them (and I had them all) have been lost in moves so I'm going to pick up this CD. I wonder how Toni and Daryl and doing these days...

This album lives up to its title and is everything a hits collection should be while most are not. If you review the Billboard Chart info for the Captain & Tennille, you'll find they racked up an impressive run of hits before their self-imposed retirement in the 80s.Almost every song on this album hit the Top 10 on one or more Billboard Chart between the Hot 100 and Adult Comtemporary Charts. They even managed to hit on the R&B and Country charts. Not many acts, if any, in the last 20 years can lay claim to that. If you're looking for first rate singing backed with top notch arrangements and production, this versatile pop collection is for you.
