It seems logical that the wizards behind The Ultimate Cookie Book, The Ultimate Ice Cream Book, The Ultimate Muffin Book, and The Ultimate Candy Book would unleash their superlative skills on cooking in general. Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough's The Ultimate Cook Book delivers more than 900 new recipes; that's more than three years of meals! In addition to all the recipes, this 500-plus-page giant compendium contains numerous tips and thousands of variations on everything from appetizers to desserts, breakfast to a late-night treat.
Library Journal
The ten earlier cookbooks in this popular series all focused on a single topic, from shrimp to ice cream to peanut butter. Now the authors present recipes for all courses of a meal, with dozens of variations and suggestions for many more (e.g., "Ten Things To Do with Gravlax"). The recipes are simple and mostly quick, and they are inspired by a wide variety of cuisines; although many are classics or familiar old favorites, there are imaginative twists as well. Boxes on ingredients, techniques, culinary lore, and helpful tips are scattered throughout. Other big books, such as The Gourmet Cookbook, offer more sophisticated recipes, but Weinstein and Scarbrough's collection will be accessible even to the novice. Busy cooks looking for ideas for a quick meal or for a company dinner will find dozens of possibilities here. Recommended for most collections.

This book is a great resource, a reference even, for any cook. It's comprehensive in scope and provides variations and alternative methods of preparation and serving. The directions are written in an easily-readable fashion. I highly recommend it for beginner cooks, but almost as much for experienced cooks as well since we can all benefit from some new knowledge, new tricks and skill sharpening and The Ultimate Cook Book offers all of that.
