Best desert outdoors book I've read

This is honestly the best book I've ever read on hiking, backpacking, 4WD travel, and mountain biking in desert areas. A big book, it covers both North America and world deserts, and provides much more specific information and advice than I've found in any other desert hiking books. Though not billed as a 'desert survival' book, there's actually more survival information in here than in a dedicated desert survival book (and the material isn't limited to U.S. deserts, either). No, this isn't a trail guide for a quick in-and-out foray on some manicured desert path, instead what you get is a very detailed how-to on learning the art of safely traveling the wildest and most remote desert areas - whether it's solo backpacking or planning a desert 4WD expedition. If that's what interests you, this is THE book to get.

Must Have for Desert Hikers and Campers!

This book is a convenient summary of what it takes to both enjoy your trip to the desert, and how to survive 'off the grid' if circumstances require you to do so. It's easy to read but packed with details that other authors just seem to pass over. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys camping, hiking or driving in the desert.

Ultimate Desert Handbook: A Manual for Desert Hikers, Campers, and Travelers

I have really learned alot from using this handbook as a reference. It is full of helpful suggestions and explanations. I have met the author. The University of Arizona had him come to their bookstore for a book signing. He is sharp, knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

    Great How-to Book

This book is a very clear, readable explanation of how-to safely explore desert areas. The author does an excellent job of covering all the technical topics of desert exploration and survival, without boring or overwhelming the reader. I highly recommend this book.

Best desert hiking book on the market

I got this book as a gift since I hike a lot of remote canyon country, and I love it. If you hike, backpack, or mountain bike the desert you ought to read this book. I especially liked the chapters on desert terrain, wildlife, and trip planning.
