A two-disc collection that is sure to raise your roof and get your neighbor's attention, Ultimate Funk is that rare commodity, a compilation that actually delivers on its title. From Parliament's "Flashlight," which starts things off, to Carl Carlton's "She's a Bad Mama Jama," which finishes things, this is a funky dance party in a box. Along the way there's James Brown ("Make It Funky, Pt. 1"), the Ohio Players ("Love Rollercoaster"), Rose Royce ("Car Wash"), and Lipps, Inc. ("Funkytown"), among many others. The first part of Marvin Gaye's easy and irresistible "Got to Give It Up" is here, and while space and length restrictions undoubtedly precluded using the full track, one wishes it could have been included in its entirety. That one complaint aside, Ultimate Funk brings it from start to finish, and is a quick and easy way to get da funk into da house.
