Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Scott S. Floyd
As a 6th grade English teacher, I struggle to find ways to keep the students excited about all of the different formats of writing. This book not only lessens my struggle, but also aids those interested in extended activities involving Geography, Art, Math, Technology, Film, Music, and a host of other studies. It is truly the "ultimate" in lists for student contests. I called one of the references listed to acquire information and was immediately sent the necessary materials for my students to participate. No matter whether your student is in public, private, or home school, there is a contest for everyone. Pendleton has gone to great lengths to compile this information and categorize it in an easy to follow fashion. Choose your discipline, select a competition, and call, write, or e-mail the host of the contest for information or entry forms. It is that easy. Let the student see that their talents will not go unnoticed. Not only will the faculty at my school use this text, I am also purchasing The Ultimate Guide to Student Contests, Grades 7-12. You cannot miss with this book.

K-Gr 6-Readers will find a contest to capture every academic interest here. The focus of the book is not on winning, but on the effort, which is viewed as a confidence booster and an opportunity to learn and grow. A short introduction in an upbeat, informative question-and-answer format states this concept and offers suggestions on using the book. Each chapter opens with a brief foreword that describes the type of contests included: "Grand Openings" arts & humanities, "Headliners" speeches and essays, "Get Creative" poetry and fiction, "Send It In" publishing opportunities, "Quantum Kids" math, science & technology, "Honor Roll" academic talent searches and recognition awards, and "Scattered Matters" miscellaneous and multidisciplinary competitions. Each entry provides detailed information complete with contact names, fax numbers, and Internet addresses, when available. The catchy and appealing annotations for each listing discuss the eligibility restrictions, deadlines, fees, and prizes. Many include sample winning entries to give contestants an idea of what is expected of them. An encouraging and positive guide.-Stephani Hutchinson, Pioneer Elementary School, Sunnyside, WA
