I found this in my parents book collection when I was about 14, and it changed my life and the way I think for the better. Approaching my 28th birthday soon, this book still shapes how I exist within the world. It basically tells you to stop beating yourself up. There is no convoluted '36-step program', no 'succeed or fail' journey it's simply about contemplating the points he makes. He invites you to think, which is great! Rather than start by explaining why you suck and why HE has the solution, he explains the concepts and benefits of self-confidence and more. Throughout the book, it feels more like he's communicating universal truths that he happened across and felt a duty to share, rather than selling you 'HIS method'. Speaking of communication, I found the chapter on it immensely beneficial. He explains that everyone, including the reader, likes to be listened to - thus listening well 'and honestly' is the main skill one needs to related to people. This book goes beyond religion and social status quo. 'Wrong' is described as something that hurts others - aside from that, things like religion and sexual acts are treated as the business of the individual, and guilt is described as a destructive burden. Favoring self-confidence over conformity, positivity over negativity, and self-acceptance over guilt, he explains his points without ego. I was a confused teenager until I got a head start by finding and reading this book. The teachings are now second nature, because they've worked so well. 13 years later, it's guarded in my dresser anywhere I live.

I was looking for a book to help my 5 year old build confidence and didn't find anything specific to his age. As I reviewed books that weren't specific to his age, I ran across this one. What I found while reading this book to help my son was a book that helped me, thus helping him. I found out that my caution for my son was creating self-doubt for him. I highly recommend this book.

I recommend this book to anyone looking to find the courage and know-how to really build their self-confidence. Robert Anthony's suggested view of reality in the book is one I'm sure we can all live with. The only gripe I have is that several points contained within the book are only supported by religous--not 'real world'--ideas and beliefs.

The author describes how to analyze self held concepts of truth, the difference between faith and belief, how concepts such as shame and guilt destroy self esteem, and courage vs. conformity.

Fabulous is the only word that can come close to describing this book! It has honestly changed my life, and opened my eyes to a new world! I definitely recommend reading this book at least once, if not, more. Another book that is similar, in that it deals with confidence, is From Shy to Social by Christopher Gray. It's designed for shy people (like myself) and enables us to come out of our shells. In fact, writing this review is actually an assignment from the book (I know!). I also recommend the Confidence Gap by Russ Harris. These three books, when studied like the bible, and most importantly ACTED upon, are extremely influential and life-changing.

I read the other reviews but wanted to look at the sample before i decided to purchase this book to see it it would be a benefit to me. So, i got the sample. Opened it up thinking that i would get enough pages to see if the book is for me.
I saw that there were 18 pages to the sample and figured that there would be at least half of them that would be part of the actual book. NOPE, it had 16 pages of junk andONLY 2 pages of actual text. What a bunch of junk. That is not only a great disservice to the book and the author but, reading just 2 pages does nothing to give prospective buyers any idea if this book would be for them. Shame on whoever allowed such a poor representation of a sample. A decent sample should have been at least 8 - 10 pages to allow a prospective buyer a good impression of the book.
As it is, even most of the reviews on this book are missing any substance that would help a prospective buyer. Unfortunately,because of the poor sample and some questionable 5 star reviews, i will not purchase this book.

for some reason this book got me so depressed, i have read it two weeks ago and am more depressed. everything is true in this book, it describes exactly my childhood and the way my parents raised me.it brought back so mutch sad memories since i was a kid.
