Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: James Aiman, MD (Medical College of Wisconsin)
Description: This monograph is one in a collection of monographs planned for publication about every three months in a series entitled Progress in Obstetric and Gynecological Sonography. Fifteen volumes are currently planned for the series. The structure of the book is traditional: individual chapters written in narrative form with figures and tables and an ending bibliography.
Purpose: The book should be a "tool for distinguishing facts from fiction" and provide an in-depth and current evaluation of advances in each topic. The series is needed, and each volume does its part to achieve the purpose.
Audience: The audience, although not stated by the editor, is sonographers and practicing obstetricians and gynecologists. Such basics as the physics of ultrasound, principles of Doppler wave shift, etc., are not included; this is not a basic text but a survey of practical uses. The list of authors is international and most have written excellent chapters.
Features: The many sonogram photographs are printed with good resolution and effectively illustrate the desired point. Many of the chapters cite references no more current than 1991-1992. Most chapters have 35 or fewer references. The index is of marginal use in locating a specific point. The table of contents is adequate. There is a page of color photographs of Doppler flow studies.
Assessment: This is an exciting book that should fit nicely once the entire series in obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound is published. Tables of normal measurements in several chapters are most useful. A more extensive bibliography would have given the reader the option to pursue a desired topic in greater depth. As a skeptic, I would have appreciated clinical and pathologic correlation with monographic images. How sensitive is ultrasound in the diagnosis of endometrial polyps or myomata? This type of information is often missing.
