This book is a comprehensive reference and practical guide on the technology and application of ultrasound to the musculoskeletal system. It is organized into two main sections. The first is devoted to general aspects, while the second provides a systematic overview of the applications of musculoskeletal ultrasound in different areas of the body. Each chapter of the second section provides an introduction on clinical anatomy and the essentials of clinical history and physical examination. Thereafter, performance of the ultrasound study is explained and the normal and pathological anatomy is reviewed. To assist in understanding, the ultrasound scans are correlated with drawings, photographs, images obtained using other modalities, and anatomic specimens. There is a generous complement of high-quality illustrations based on high-end equipment. This book contains a wealth of invaluable information.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Richard Tupler, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This is an all-inclusive book for physicians who are involved, or want to get involved, in the performance and interpretation of musculoskeletal ultrasound studies. There is a wealth of relevant, practical, anatomic, clinical, and imaging information in the almost 1,000 pages. Given the emphasis on ultrasound, the extensive images are welcome as are the anatomic dissection specimens and medical drawings which serve to further demonstrate the principles and the imaging presentations of the entire spectrum of musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Purpose: The goal is to provide the definitive resource for specific, state-of-the-art musculoskeletal imaging and interpretation information that practitioners need in ultrasound imaging. As this is a definitive reference on the ultrasound appearance of common musculoskeletal disorders, the authors have truly succeeded in their goal.
Audience: Though not explicitly stated, it is obvious that anyone involved in the interpretation of musculoskeletal ultrasound would find this book invaluable. It will acquaint beginners with the basics of musculoskeletal ultrasound, while more advanced sonologists and sonographers will learn new skills, means of avoiding pitfalls, and the relevance of the ultrasound study to the clinical background. Rheumatologists, orthopedists, radiologists, and ultrasonographers should have access to this substantial work.
Features: This comprehensive reference presents clear images of common diseases, disorders, and injuries accompanied by a succinct discussion of relevant issues and facts. Each chapter provides an introduction to clinical anatomy and the essentials of clinical history and physical examination. Then, the performance of the ultrasound study is explained and the normal and pathological anatomy is reviewed. To further understanding, the ultrasound scans are correlated with schematic drawings, photographs, and images obtained using other modalities, particularly CT and MRI. The illustrations are not only of high quality, but there is hardly a page without an appropriate image which serves to complement the text and emphasize the relevant correlation. The chapters cover all anatomic regions and disease entities. The book is well organized with particularly welcome sections that address instrumentation, interventional procedures, and pediatric applications.
Assessment: This exceptional resource deserves a place in every radiology library as an authoritative reference for any physician who regularly deals with ultrasound imaging of musculoskeletal disorders. All in all, this book offers essential guidance on how to conduct an ultrasound examination, how best to obtain optimal images, and on how best to interpret the information. The result is a thorough yet focused and clinically relevant reference and practical guide to the technology and application of ultrasound to the musculoskeletal system.
