Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Patricia Quinlan, RDMS (Froedtert Hospital)
Description: This book is a mock exam based on the ARDMS physics examination. It uses questions, answers, reference review, and an exam in the last chapter for practicing test taking strategies. A special feature is its coverage of topics that will appear in the proposed new outline which will be implemented soon, according to the ARDMS.
Purpose: According to the author, this book is "dedicated exclusively to a..reference review of ultrasound physics for those who plan to take the ultrasound physics exam." This is a worthwhile objective as there are few review books devoted to ultrasound physics. This is perhaps the most difficult part of the ARDMS exam, so any physics review book is a great help. The author offers a complete and comprehensive guide to review ultrasound physics.
Audience: This book is written for anyone who is eligible to sit for the ultrasound physics examination offered by the ARDMS, according to the author, and I would have to agree. The author is very credible, as she is a registered diagnostic medical sonographer and has her vascular credentials as well.
Features: This book contains question and answer format for physics topics including principles, transducers, pulse echo imaging, images, storage, display, doppler, artifacts, and an image gallery. It has a great variety of outstanding physics questions, with answers and complete explanations. The last chapter is an especially helpful comprehensive ultrasound physics review based on the ARDMS exam. The book seems to be a bit lacking in images and color.
Assessment: This is a very helpful review book, perhaps one of the most complete physics review books I have come across. It is comprehensive in its questions and answers. The test in the last chapter is helpful for test timing, important when taking the real examination. I liked the fact that there are references along with the answers to the questions, offering further resources for reading and study. The images are of good quality, but I would have liked to have seen more and maybe some charts or graphs with color.
