Overview

The history of Barcelona in Gugulethu:
In the heart of Gugulethu is one of the most poverty stricken Townships in Cape Town, called Barcelona, and named after the Barcelona Olympic Games of 1992.
During the apartheid era Barcelona was used as a rubbish dump.
It is now home to over 7,500 people with approximately 2,300 Families inhabiting the area during the 18 + years of its existence.
Of these, 2,800 are children of school going age, while 1,200 are of creche age.
The houses are informal homes, known as shacks, which are made from scrap metal and wood.
There are 14 water taps, approximately 1 water tap per 471 people.
There is no adequate form of sanitation and flooding is a frequent occurrence as the land has no proper drainage.
Shack fires are common, in which people and children die every year.
Most houses have little or no access to electricity due to poor resources and infrastructure.
51% of Barcelona inhabitants are unemployed.
The average person earns approximately R 3000 (approx. $330) per month and their main expense is food.
Child headed households are common and many families are headed
by a single parent or grandparents.

Leela Atherton: "What does Umbeleko.npc have to do with me, Leela Atherton, writer of romantic stories? As I said in my interview, living in Cape Town, South Africa makes it difficult to ignore the huge gap between the haves and the have-nots of this country. Umbeleko was born due to the intervention of a handful of people; my husband, myself and dear friends of ours who also wanted to make a difference in this beautiful, conflicting country of ours. Writing satisfies my creativity and Umbeleko eases my social conscience."
