Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Traci Avalos
In this book, young Isabel spends a wonderful day with her three loving aunts. Each aunt has something special planned for her. With Tia Dulce, Isabel makes delicious empanadas. Then she gets a makeover and dresses up with Tia Rosa. Finally, she dances with Tia Clara. To finish off her day, all three aunts join in the dancing with Isabel and enjoy the empanadas she helped to make. This book illustrates the love and caring relationship between a young girl and her aunts, and readers will be able to experience that joy through Isabel. The bright illustrations and expressive characters help to immerse readers in the story. Though culture has a big role in the types of activities the characters do, most children can relate to cooking, dancing, and playing dress up, even if some of the specifics are unfamiliar. It presents a good opportunity to discuss cultural similarities and differences for readers who may not be familiar with Hispanic culture, and it will be very familiar to those who are. The book is fully bilingual in English and Spanish. Reviewer: Traci Avalos
Kirkus Reviews
Isabel loves spending her Saturdays with her aunts, t'as Dulce, Rosa and Clara. On this particular Saturday, she bakes empanadas with Dulce and especially enjoys kneading and rolling out the dough into which they'll put the spiced meat. Then Rosa dresses her as a princess, even using face powder, eye shadow and lipstick. Finally, Isabel and Clara go to the living room to dance until the empanadas are ready. Bernardo's story is full of family activity, though lacking in dramatic tension and problems to be solved. Rodriguez's illustrations are full-color, full-page paintings, facing the pages of bilingual text. Warm, tropical colors predominate, highlighted by strong outlines and simplified realism. The rear endpapers include recipes, in both English and Spanish, for meat empanadas and the spiced beef, picadillo, used for filling. While not an essential purchase for libraries, it will be useful in collections with an emphasis on family traditions and togetherness. (Picture book. 6-9)
