Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Maria E. Gentle
This 25th anniversary edition of A Chair for My Mother, a Caldecott Honor book, will always be timely no matter the year or the language. A young girl along with her mother and grandmother save all their coins in a big jar so they can purchase the chair of their dreams, a big comfortable velvet easy chair with big beautiful roses all over it. All their possessions were burned in a fire and now they have started to refurbish a small apartment with the help of relatives and friends. But after a year, they still have neither a sofa nor an easy chair. When the jar is filled to the brim, they take it to the bank to exchange for dollar bills so they can go hunting for their dream chair. The watercolor illustrations are reminiscent of what a child would draw if a child had conceived of the story, somewhat Gauguin-like, primitive in many ways. The warmth of the story stays with you long after you've finished it. After reading this you'll want to go and sit a spell in your own sillon. Recommended for home, school and public libraries. Reviewer: Maria E. Gentle
