Un Viaje [Bonus CD & DVD]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
Mexico's Café Tacuba must be the most popular experimental art-rock band in the world. The thunderous applause captured on this double-live set (with bonus DVD and triple-disc versions) is indicative of just how profound intelligent, eclectic, even obscurantist pop can be. Of course, the Tacubas have the home court advantage; Un Viaje was recorded in the massive Palacio de los Deportes, only a few miles from the band's home base of Satelite, a Mexico City suburb. But the formidable range of their material -- the fragile early-'90s nerd-pop that begins both the set and their career, the gorgeous folk of "Esa Noche" and "Ojalá que Llueva Café," the twitchy, mathematical ...

But the formidable range of their material -- the fragile early-'90s nerd-pop that begins both the set and their career, the gorgeous folk of "Esa Noche" and "Ojalá que Llueva Café," the twitchy, mathematical rock of their most recent, more remote discs -- is an impressive barrier. Nonetheless, the crowd eats it up. The band has never played better, pulling unexpected nuance and color out of 15-year-old songs such as "Maria" with jazzlike precision. Of course, the roars for these older pop hits is most deafening, and disconcertingly so, given their brittle textures of melodica and syn-drums. But even the puzzling instrumentals "La 2" and "La 6" get an enthusiastic response. As live sets tend to anthologize, this may be the best way to appreciate the sweep of Café Tacuba's music, in all its fearless, confounding originality. The bonus disc, included in the box set with DVD, boasts seven previously unavailable songs, including a Latin rock history lesson: an acoustic medley of nine classics from Maldita Vecindad, El Tri, Fabulosos Cadillacs, Mano Negra, and other Tacuba contemporaries who haven't outlasted this Mexico City quartet.
All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
Recorded in live in Mexico in October of 2004, Café Tacuba's Un Viaje A Trip serves as a delightful and woolly retrospective on where the band has been since it began recording in 1992, ushering in the rock en Español movement. Offered in various editions, the double-CD version contains 29 tracks that literally span Café Tacuba's jaunty, groundbreaking career. Jumping forward and back across their catalog, Un Viaje includes no less that half of their self-titled debut, along with three or four tracks each from every subsequent release. Also delightful are the inclusions of live readings of covers from Avalancha de Éxitos Café Tacuba's tribute recording to those who influenced them: "Chilanga Banda," "Como de Extranda," "Ojalá Que Llueva Café," and "No Controles." It's true that a live Café Tacuba offering will only likely appeal to die-hard fans of the band in the United States, Mexico, and Latin America. However, Café Tacuba have been trying like the devil to win English-speaking American audiences for years with their innovative brand of uncompromising, utterly ingenious rock & roll, to little success. So why not give one to the fans? If you dig these guys, this one will not disappoint -- crowd noise notwithstanding. If you don't, or haven't heard of them, you have no idea what you're missing. [Universal Latino reissued the album in 2005, adding a third CD as well as a DVD of the concert.]
