CHAPTER 1

It was another beautiful day in Southern California with the sky a brilliant blue, and no clouds around. Donna, and Tom were working with the archaeology department at the local Jr. College where Dr. Thompson was teaching. With his credentials, and experience, Dr. Thompson could teach at any college he wanted, but he chose to stay with the local Jr. College, because it gave him the time off he wanted to plan other field trips, and be available to take jobs around the world. Dr. Thompson has spent many years working with archaeological foundations preserving, and restoring artifacts found in many foreign counties.

Even though this is a Junior College, it had a pretty good archaeology lab, with carbon dating equipment, electron microscope, chemical analysis computers and many other devices.

A couple of years ago during a summer session, Dr. Thompson was teaching a beginning archaeology class. While teaching this class he met Tom Livingston, Jim Harvard, and Susan Campbell. At the end of that class, it was decided they would plan a field trip designed for the newcomers in archaeology, to get some hands on experience working with the tools, and to experience the procedures of a real dig. During that field trip, Dr. Thompson met Donna Peterson, and Jane Pitman, both experienced archaeologists.

It was decided by the class that they would take on Mt. Shasta to see what it had to offer for these new students. Sounded like an exciting trip, and everyone was ready to go. Since the field trip was at the end of the summer session, and because of scheduling there were only three students, and Dr. Thompson that were able to go. So the four of them planned the field trip.

The group spent about five weeks looking at and exploring Mt. Shasta. During that time, they found a lot of interesting items, and artifacts to keep them busy for several months trying to figure out just what they were, and how they all fit in with the history of this planet.

There was an old legend bouncing around for years about an extraterrestrial base, or some sort of underground city, and people living under the mountain. One of the main reasons for this trip was to try, and find out if the legend had any truth to it or not. When they arrived at Mt. Shasta, the group found out that there were some strange things happening around the mountain all the time. The people that lived in the Shasta area didn't pay any attention to any of it. They all were used to it, and it was business as usual.

The group's investigation was very thorough. During their investigation they found evidence of what they thought was some sort of life form living under the mountain, just like the legend said, but nobody knew for sure. Just here-say.

The group spent several weeks around the mountain talking to people and investigating as much as they could. The group decided it was time to go into the mountain to continue the investigation. The group was told about a strange sinkhole that mysteriously opened up next to the trail they were taking to a lava tube. The group decided that the sinkhole was just the place to start their investigation.

Because they were investigating the unknown, this sinkhole gave them a great opportunity to get things started on the right foot. The group got their climbing gear out, and started down into the sinkhole only to find out that it led into caves, and tunnels where they accidentally stumbled onto some strange evidence, indicating the possibility of a different kind of life form. They finally ran into this life form by accident, or at least that's what they thought anyway. They looked a lot like us, a little different in facial features, and a little taller. Their primary language was English, and they talked, and understood the language better them most of us. During the conversations one of the aliens said we were in fact related somehow. Maybe this life form could be considered the missing link our scientists are looking for.

The group was able to make friends with this new life form, and attempted to find out why they chose this particular time and place to made contact with us. They are very spiritual in nature, and understand how the universe has evolved through the creational energy generated by all life forms that exist in our galaxy. They basically said, the people of Earth are starting to enter into the next step of human evolution, and they are here to help us make a smooth transition. They also said that the time is growing very short when contact with extraterrestrials will be unavoidable with the people of earth.

This new life form call themselves Errans, and they say they are the most advanced in technology, and the oldest spiritually based life forms in our galaxy. They are also here to protect our planet from hostile groups of beings from open space. They said that out of a hundred or so life forms that visit this planet only a few are very hostile.

A new fall semester is about to start, and Dr. Thompson was still evaluating a lot of the finds from the last field trip to Mt. Shasta. Tom went to work at a major Airline, and Donna decided to assist Dr. Thompson with his work. Susan Campbell and Jane Pitmen headed up north around the Siskiyou mountains to finish the project Jane Pitman was working on. They would join the group at the college a little later on.

During the last field trip Tom had asked Donna to marry him and they were also busy planning their wedding. Tom told Donna she could choose the date if he could choose the year. Their wedding date was not cast in stone, but they thought they would like to have it during the Christmas season. That way there was no way Tom would forget his anniversary.

Dr. Thompson received a phone call from the local Sheriffs' department at Catalina Island. The sheriff said that one of the tourists had found something in the sand on one of the beaches of Little Harbor that's on the backside of the island. It was illegal to remove anything from the island without permission. The deputy said he would have to know what it was before he could make a decision weather to let it go or not. Nobody on the island knew what it was, or had any idea. It looked like it was many thousands of years old with a lot of different markings, and writings, and one ugly scary picture. The sheriff was told to call Dr. Thompson, because if anybody could figure it out he could. Dr. Thompson was a well-known archeologist with a lot of credits to his name.

Dr. Thompson said he couldn't make the trip right away, but he would send a couple of his colleagues to determine what it was, and asked if that would be OK?

The Sheriff said that would be fine, and all the arrangements were made.

Dr. Thompson gave Donna a call to see if she was available to make the trip to Catalina to see what they found. Donna was excited, and said sure. She called Tom to see if he was available to go along. Tom was excited about the artifact, and they both planned their trip. Tom called the airport and scheduled a Cessna 172 for the next day's flight.

Donna called Dr. Thompson back, and asked him to have the sheriff meet them at the Catalina airport the next day with the artifact.

CHAPTER 2

Trip to Catalina Island

Early the next morning, Tom and Donna got their things together and headed to the airport. They located their airplane, got everything loaded, and they were off. Tom was looking forward to the trip, because it had been a long time since he had flown into Catalina Island airport. This gave Tom a chance to keep his landing certificate renewed.

Catalina Island airport was created by cutting off two mountaintops, and filling in the valley between. Catalina is a difficult airport to get into. It's like landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier. When approaching from the North there is a one thousand six hundred foot drop down to the ocean. When approaching from the down wind base leg, you fly directly into the side of a mountain, then at the last minute make you turn ninety degrees to the final approach. If you are on a straight-in approach you need to be aware of a wind shear at the beginning of the runway. On the other end of the runway there is a fifty foot drop ninety degrees straight down then the ground slopes about two miles down to the water.

During the time Tom was attending college, he and some of his friends would fly to Catalina Island for lunch. They served Buffalo burgers and the best coleslaw ever.

They got to the airport found their aircraft. Donna was able to load most of the things they were taking like a camera, tool kit for uncovering artifacts, and a bunch of sample bags.

Tom and Donna got all seated, and strapped in. Tom did a short pre-engine start check list then opened his window and said, ... "Clear!" Then he started the engine. The engine came to life and the nose of the Cessna 172 settles down to normal height as Tom backed off on the throttle to an idol.

Tom grabbed the microphone and said, "Ground control this is Cessna 67 Tango at Delta Aviation taxi for take off."

"Cessna 67 Tango—This is Torrance ground control, cleared to taxi to runway 24 left."

"67 Tango roger."

Tom pushed the throttle forward and the aircraft started moving. Tom guided the aircraft to the run-up area next to runway 24 left to do his preflight. Tom increased the engine RPM to seventeen hundred then turned the magnetos first to the left with little RPM drop then to the right also with a little drop in RPM. He then located the carburetor heat lever and gave it a pull, and the engine dropped about a hundred RPM. "Perfect" Tom said. Tom then cycled all his control surfaces to make sure they were operating OK. Everything checks out OK.

After the preflight, Tom grabbed the microphone changed the radio to the tower frequency then said, "Torrance tower this is Cessna 67 Tango ready for take off."

Torrance tower said, "Cessna 67 Tango, taxi onto runway 24 left then cleared for take off."

"67 Tango, roger,"

Tom advanced the throttle all the way, and they started rolling. As they gained speed the ride got kind of bumpy, then Tom started pulling back on the stick, then things got smooth, and they were airborne.

Tom maintained a normal departure pattern to one thousand feet, offset ten degrees to the left, and continued the climb out. At this point they were just off the coast of Palos Verdes Estates and could see Catalina Island. Tom turned the aircraft towards the island, and leveled the aircraft at 3,500 feet. It was a beautiful day and the visibility was unlimited.

Catalina's airport was called the "Airport in the Sky" for good reason. Its altitude was 1,602 feet with a 3,000-foot runway. It had a drop at both ends. You had to be certified by landing three landings to a full stop before the airport manager would sign your logbook, and issue a landing certificate. Landing at Catalina Island was like landing on an aircraft carrier. It was a beautiful day no turbulence to speak of and the flight was smooth. About twenty minutes later Tom reached for the microphone, switched the radio frequency to Unicom then announced their arrival. "Catalina Unicom this is Cessna 67 Tango five miles out for landing runway 22 straight in approach."

A couple of minutes later Tom announced they were on final approach to runway 22. Tom landed the plane, and taxied up to the terminal building where the sheriff was waiting.

Donna said, "Good morning sheriff. How are you?"

"Fine," the sheriff said.

Tom came up and also said, "Good morning!"

The sheriff handed the artifact to Donna and asked, "Have you ever seen anything like this before?"

Donna took it, and started looking it over.

Tom, "Look at this! I mean these markings."

Tom took the artifact from Donna, and started looking it over as well. It was a small very black oddly shaped triangle, with no two sides being equal, and it seemed to be very heavy for its size. On the front surface, there was what looked like a kind of a knob or button in the middle that extended above the surface about a quarter of an inch, and about half inch in diameter. It looked like it was supposed to turn, but it didn't. There was writing all around the edge with some pictographs on the back.

"Tom," Donna said, "I recognize these markings, do you?"

Tom said, "Yes I do, especially the ugly dude with the weird head."

Donna said, "Why don't you give Dr. Thompson a call, and let him know what we have found here?"

Tom called Dr. Thompson, and described the artifact to him.

Dr. Thompson said, "You need to bring it back to the lab to see if it is dangerous or not."

Donna asked the sheriff if he could take them to the site where it was found.

The sheriff asked, "Is this an important find?"

Donna said, "This could be the key to the future of Earth, but we won't know that until we get it back to our lab for a look see."

The sheriff looked at Tom, and then to Donna and said, "Yeah sure, the find of the century, and the key to the history of mankind, and the safety of Earth. Right!"

Donna just shrugged and said, "Could be?"

"Well, if I release this to you I'll need a receipt or something."

"OK, no problem," Donna said.

Tom remembered what Satish and Linsha said about telepathy. So Tom thought he would give it a try. He moved away from the sheriff and Donna, walking toward the airfield, and concentrated on the artifact. He pictured Satish in his thought. He concentrated for what he thought was a long time, and just when he thought about giving up he got a strange feeling and heard a voice in his head that just said, "keep it safe until we need it."

Tom walked up to Donna and said softly, "I just contacted our friend, and she said that we should keep it safe until we need it."

Donna said, "How did you contact ..."

Tom just pointed to his head. "Donna, ... it really works, that was quite an experience."

"I'll bet!" Donna said, "And what am I thinking now?"

Tom, rolling his eyes at Donna said, "Not here, there're people watching us!"

Donna said, "Not funny! ... Come on."

The sheriff agreed to take them to where the artifact was found. They hopped in the sheriff 's Jeep, and drove for about fifteen minutes or so. The sheriff gestured to the left and said. "It was right over there that the tourists found it."

They all got out of the Jeep, and Tom asked if the sheriff had a metal detector. He got into the back of his jeep, pulled out his metal detector and handed it to Tom. All three briefly walked over the area, with Tom using the detector, but found nothing further.

Donna asked the sheriff if they could come back here to investigate further in the near future.

"Sure anytime, just let me know when you plan on coming."

They all got back into the Jeep, and headed back to the airport. Tom and Donna decided to stay for a while, and have lunch and asked the sheriff if he would like to join them. The sheriff replied that would be nice and they all sat down for lunch. The waitress came over to take their order.

Tom asked. "Do you still have buffalo burgers?"

The waitress said, "Yes, we certainly do. It's our specialty."

Everybody agreed to the buffalo burgers, and the waitress said, "Three buffalo burgers coming right up."

Donna laid the artifact on the table and started to examine it.

The sheriff asked, "Have you ever seen anything like this before?"

Tom replied, "We don't recognize the artifact, but we do recognize the drawings, and the writings."

Donna said, "This is an extremely important find, and it would be a good idea if you didn't mention it to anybody, at least not for a while anyway."

"How do you know it's important?" asked the sheriff.

"It's just a strong feeling inside, you know?" Donna said.

About that time the waitress came over, and brought their silverware, salt and pepper, and ketchup.

As soon as she put them on the table all items were immediately attracted to the artifact.

Donna and Tom looked at the artifact.

Donna said. "Uh oh! Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

Tom said, "It's highly magnetic!"

Donna said, "Do you think ..."

Tom grabbed the artifact, and quickly headed for a place that was totally dark. He got to a broom closet and closed the door. It didn't glow in the dark. Thank God!

When Tom returned, Donna said. "Is it?"

Tom said, "Fortunately for us it wasn't radio active or glow in the dark!"

"Well, that's a relief" the sheriff said. "What now?" he asked.

Tom said, "Wait a minute. Didn't the artifact attract items other then metal?"

"Yea! I wonder why?" questioned Donna. "Better contact Satish or Linsha after lunch."

"Good Idea," Tom said.
