Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Dawn Talbott
Shraff tells the stories of several different characters living in the barrio in southern California. In Unbroken, David Morales returns to the barrio after spending two years in prison for stealing. David’s worst fears are confirmed when he sees the prejudice in people’s eyes as he tries to rebuild his life. Eventually, he finds a job that he loves and a woman who steals his heart, but he has kept his past a secret and is afraid it will ruin everything he has worked so hard to rebuild. Schraff’s stories incorporate a large variety of characters, both male and female, though there is not much development. As they go through the daily struggles of growing up in the barrio, some of the characters fall into trouble. Some work determinedly to stay away from the lures of gangs and drugs, while others slowly rebuild damaged lives. The story lines are rather predictable, but overeall, they are relatively solid selections with some attempt at depth. The very simple writing style lends itself well to readers who struggle with more advanced text. (Urban Underground) Ages 12 to 18.
