Children's Literature - Sarah Raymond
Rebecca Brown is able to do what many are not. She is able to see and communicate with the dead; the ghosts that have been trapped on earth due to unfinished business. A year after an incident in New Orleans where she almost died, a mysterious blue-eyed stranger shows up in New York asking for her help. Rebecca finds herself back in New Orleans helping a boy named Frank who was murdered while carrying a locket. Frank is unable to move on until he returns the locket to the rightful owner. Rebecca decides to help Frank but at the same time her past is still chasing her in the form of Toby Sutton, a boy that blames her for the events from the year before and is out to get revenge. This fast paced novel is filled with twists and turns as Rebecca tries to help Frank uncover the missing locket, avoid Toby Sutton, and figure out where she stands with Anton Grey, her love interest from last year. Reviewer: Sarah Raymond; Ages 12 up.
Kirkus Reviews
In this second installment of the Ruined series, New Yorker Rebecca Brown heads back to New Orleans, where new mysteries--and new ghosts--await. Rebecca--sure that her dealings with ghosts had ended with the breaking of the family curse--is hoping for a haunt-free return trip to New Orleans to enjoy spring break with her father and her best friend, Ling. But when a handsome, blue-eyed boy named Frank appears to her, explaining his need to retrieve a locket from an old, abandoned house in Tremé, Rebecca knows she has to help. Since Frank was supposed to be delivering the locket when he was murdered, he must complete the delivery soon or else be trapped in the ghost world forever. Retrieving a locket sounds like an easy task, until Rebecca realizes that there's another ghost, the very one who murdered Frank, plus Rebecca's flesh-and-blood nemesis Toby Sutton, trying to thwart her at every turn. New Orleans is richly evoked, with accurate details, believable local characters and (slightly overdone) dinner-table discussions of gentrification. Rebecca's love interest, Anton, has a regrettably small role; readers may find themselves wishing for more romantic interludes and less unnecessary recapping of the plot, but this is a small quibble. A solid and satisfying paranormal mystery, this offering will please existing fans and may win over some new ones to boot. (postscript) (Paranormal thriller. 12 & up)

Unbroken is the second book in the Ruined series by Paula Morris

Unbroken is the second book in the Ruined series by Paula Morris. Rebecca Brown, is the main character. In the novel, she returns to New Orleans. Rebecca has the ability to see ghosts and New Orleans is the ideal setting for the series. New Orleans has a long history of paranormal activity and mystery. This book quickly becomes a murder mystery while Rebecca tries to help a ghost. However, ghosts aren't the only ones causing problems in Rebecca's life. Last year, Rebecca's cousin died, and her cousin's boyfriend, Toby is seeking revenge. Unbroken is a fast paced murder mystery with a lot of twists and turns. The plot wasn't predictable and I couldn't put it down! I cannot wait to read Rebecca's next adventure as a ghost whisperer. This book was exciting and thrilling and the author didn't hold back.

    I.Want.The.Third.Book.NOW!

I love the Ruined series and Unbroken is worth every penny! Just like the editorial review said, I wish there was more romance between Rebecca and Anton! I really want to know if they become a couple at the end because it's not that clear. But I really loved it and I'm crossing my fingers for third book! Maybd this time when (spolier alert) Anton visits Rebecca in New York, as mentioned in the end of the book. I also enjoyed learning about Edgar Degas in the historical note. Paula Morris did her researcg!

    Natalie's review on Unbroken

After I read the first book, Ruined, I was really exited when I saw this book. Before you read this book, please read the first one. It makes the Unbroken more suspensfull than it needs tp be. Also, please read Palua Morris' other book, Dark Souls. It is not based on the same charcters as Ruined and Unbroken. Thanks!

I really liked the first book, Ruined, and I was excited to get

I really liked the first book, Ruined, and I was excited to get this one. I found myself getting easily distracted which doesn't happen when I'm reading a good book. It just seemed so slow at some points. Some things really caught my attention but that's it.
