Meet the Author

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was an outspoken abolitionist and writer. Born in Connecticut, Stowe had little first-hand experience with slavery; however, she did witness at least one slave auction. Stowe became an ardent abolitionist; she and her husband participated in the Underground Railroad and assisted a number of runaway slaves. Her lasting contribution to the abolitionist cause was her 1852 novel UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, whose stark description of the evils of slavery spurred support for abolition in the North.
