Uncommon Prayer & Other Short Stories

Editorial Reviews

If a jazz artist grew tired of struggling and was longing for financial security, it was tempting to sell out, give NAC programmers what they wanted and become as formulaic as possible. But there are other improvisers who realize that there is a middle ground between being totally uncommercial and becoming a complete sellout or a musical prostitute. Henry Robinett is neither of those things; balancing commercial and artistic considerations, the guitarist makes ...

But there are other improvisers who realize that there is a middle ground between being totally uncommercial and becoming a complete sellout or a musical prostitute. Henry Robinett is neither of those things; balancing commercial and artistic considerations, the guitarist makes Uncommon Prayer and Other Short Stories a CD that is interesting more often than not. Robinett has one foot in fusion and the other in pop-jazz/crossover, a few of the more radio-friendly cuts are lightweight, but most of the material demonstrates that he is talented as both a soloist and a composer. The only thing on Uncommon Prayer which was recorded in 1997 that he didn't write is "Palhaco," a piece by Brazilian great Egberto Gismonti. Robinett is impressive on originals that range from the funky "Sez Who?" and the Latin-flavored "Sun Peeks" to the Pat Metheny-ish "This Is Why." Metheny, Weather Report, and the Yellowjackets are among the fusionists who have influenced Robinett's writing, and those influences serve him well on this generally likable, if imperfect, CD.
