Overview

Filled with interesting facts and information, this book offers a comprehensive approach to teaching children about anatomy and functions of the human body. Beginning with the dermal system each layer addresses the skeletal system, digestive system, urinary system, circulatory system, repiratory system, muscular system, and nervous system. Children will learn why bones can bend without breaking, how blood travels thru the body and protects against germs, how different parts of the brain controls different functions of the body and what smoking does to your lungs.

Children's Literature
This book will be an attention getter on any shelf if it is displayed with the cover showing. Through the middle of the book, from front to back is a plastic model of the interior of a human body. The book is about an inch thick, and though the pages do not fill the width, the model does. When the front cover is opened, it appears that the light brown tint (the skin) has been peeled away and you can feel parts of the skeleton—the skull, rib cage and pelvis—all of which are held in place by clips to the double thick pages. The writing on the two first pages is about the dermal system and the skeletal system and is divided into paragraphs of information with headings such as "Gimme some skin!" and "Bone zone." The next two pages cover more about the skeletal system and the clips hold leg and arm bones. As the pages are turned, the digestive system, urinary system, circulatory system, respiratory system, muscular system and nervous system are discussed and body parts peeled away. The idea is good and the production is well done. Young scientists will certainly learn from it. 2002, Silver Dolphin, Ages 8 up.

This book is simplistic and perfect for children. Also each page contains a piece of the diagram so when the book is closed you can see the whole makeup of the human body.

I've purchased a number of books in the Uncover series, including: Uncover the Human Body Uncover a Horse Uncover a Dog Uncover a Tarantula Uncover a Cobra Uncover a Frog Uncover a Racecar These are all excellent, educational while entertaining. Each page shows one aspect of the anatomy such as the skeletal or digestive system. Central to each page is a plastic model that nests with the models on the other pages to give an excellent view of how things fit together inside. Each page is also packed with other illustrations and interesting information. I gave most of the books for presents but kept some for visitors. Uncover the Human Body went to a 9-year-old girl who was very excited. Every time we get out some of these books people are riveted to the pages - everyone from small children to adults. Teens seem especially fascinated. One important thing to keep in mind: these books are fragile! Each page contains plastic parts for the bones, organs, etc. and look a lot like toys to little kids. The parts WILL BE BROKEN if you hand the book over to a small child. This should not be a problem, since with this book it is far better for an adult to turn the pages and explain and talk about each topic with the child. Note that most of the books I found on bookstore shelves were damaged in some way, probably from unsupervised handling by small children. I ordered all of my copies and they arrived in perfect condition. I think the books should be shrink-wrapped but the clerk at Barnes&Noble told me that was suggested but the publisher was not interested and the store was not permitted to provide a protective cover.
