Editorial Reviews

ALA Booklist
Praise for THE ZOMBIE CHASERS:“What makes this latest entry into the developing middle-grade zombie canon stand out is Kloepfer’s gleeful insistence on gore and Wolfhard’s squiggly drawings that really bring the laughs. Stick around for the next vomitous volume.”
Children's Literature - Elizabeth Young
A zombie outbreak unleashes its wretched gore in Phoenix, Arizona. Three junior high students seem to have an antidote for this infestation and it is up to them to save the country, if not the world, from this ghoulish epidemic. Who would have thought ginkgo biloba would be part of the remedy? Zack, Zoe, her best friend's dog, Twinkles, Rice, and the newest zombie chaser, Ozzie—are the only "normal" people in this sequel to Kloepfer's first installment of "The Zombie Chasers" series. It is up to them to save their parents from zombie attacks at their school, and they later find themselves part of a national security effort with the Secret Service. This is definitely not for the squeamish. Each turn of the page finds a vision more gruesome than the past. It is as if Kloepfer has created events just to describe grotesque and repulsive activities in excruciating detail just to see how far he can go and how disgusting one can be and yet still be published. Somehow, the author may consider that a compliment. Possibly the only positive note in this work is that friends should stick together no matter what. The un-zombie quartet does just that, even after one breaks a leg and travels to the nation's capital in search of another friend. The events leading to their reunion are far-fetched and less than believable. This will never be confused with, or compared to, a classic literary work, but may offer immature escapism for reluctant pre-teen readers. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young

Gr 5–7—In this continuing saga of six middle school kids versus the living dead, the action starts right where The Zombie Chasers (HarperCollins, 2010) left off. It's been only a day since virus-tainted fast food transformed the major portion of the U.S. population into flesh-eating monsters. Zack; his geeky best buddy, Rice; and their crew are on the run. The guys have discovered a possible antidote to the zombie virus-junior high "Queen Bee" Madison, whose vegan penchant for ginkgo biloba health drinks makes her immune to the burger-based plague. She has already succeeded in dezombifying Zack's sister and her pet puppy, but the epidemic is spreading fast. A desperate government figures that Madison may be the country's last hope and hauls her off to a Washington, DC, research lab. Meanwhile, Zack and the others escape in a stolen tank and head for home, hoping to find their parents alive and unzombied. Unfortunately, they discover their whole school infested with vicious undead teachers, coaches, and even lunch ladies—all slavering for fresh brains. The episodic plot is secondary to the often-grisly humor, and adults with nervous stomachs may cringe at the high gross-out quotient, especially in the graphic descriptions of the zombie hordes. Amusing but rather macabre black-and-white cartoon illustrations, heavy on drooping eyeballs and dripping slime, add to the atmosphere. The cliff-hanger conclusion augurs further adventures to come. Written with tongue firmly in cheek—and other body parts all over the landscape—this book will appeal to reluctant readers, particularly middle school boys.—Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL

Meet the Author

John Kloepfer began his writing career at five years old with a one-sentence short story: "And then one day the monsters came." He lives in New York City, where he is preparing for a massive zombie invasion.

Steve Wolfhard lives in Toronto, Canada, with a fat cat named Haircut. The first zombie movie Steve ever saw was Return of the Living Dead, and it still scares the crud out of him.

    Recommend!

My nearly 11 year old son read this series and loved it! It's hard to find books he really enjoys but he plowed through this series one after the other in just a couple weeks of reading 30 minutes a day. He says they are funny and they describe the zombies very well. He recommends it for others.
