Overview

There’s no guarantee in life.
Or for that matter, death…

Vampire queen Betsy Taylor has awoken in a Chicago morgue, naked as a corpse. Her last memory is reconciling with her husband, Eric Sinclair, after a time-traveling field trip to hell (literally) with her sister, Laura. Now, she’s Jane Doe #291, wrapped in plastic with a toe tag. Betsy can’t help but wonder, what in hell happened?

For starters, she and Laura didn’t time-travel alone. What followed them had a wicked agenda: to kill Betsy in a time when she was young and vulnerable and end her future reign as queen. But it’s not just Betsy’s future that’s taken an unexpected detour. Everyone in her circle, alive or undead, is feeling the chill. Betsy can’t let the unthinkable happen. It would be a cold day in hell if she did.

Meet the Author

MaryJanice Davidson
MaryJanice Davidson

MaryJanice Davidson is the New York Times bestselling author of the Undead novels featuring Betsy Taylor; Derik's Bane, and the new young adult novels featuring Jennifer Scales, written with her husband, Anthony Alongi, among other titles.

Biography

Reading the coyly self-deprecating autobiography on her web site, one gets the distinct impression that MaryJanice Davidson does not have the slightest interest in talking about herself. Perhaps it's because she simply doesn't have the time. Prolific does not begin to describe this chart-busting dynamo, the author of four bestselling series and literally dozens of novellas and short stories.

A writer with a few romances and YA novels to her credit, Davidson had tried for years to interest publishers in her idea for a humorous, tongue-in-cheek vampire romance. After dozens of rejections (and assurances that there was no market for paranormal!), she submitted her manuscript for publication online. An editor at a New York publishing house downloaded the story, was royally entertained, and contacted Davidson to acquire the print rights to Undead and Unwed. On the spot, she was offered a three-book contract.

When Undead and Unwed and its wry sequel, Undead and Unemployed, were released in early 2004, not one, but two stars were born: Davidson and her irresistible protagonist, the reluctant vampire queen Betsy Taylor. A smart, sassy, 27-year-old secretary, Betsy is killed in a freak car accident and wakes up (so to speak) to discover that she is not only a vampire but the much-prophesied Queen of the Undead. Readers loved Davidson's wry take on vampire literature, a genre long distinguished by its gothic self-seriousness. Betsy, with her smarty-pants attitude and passion for designer shoes, is one vampire queen who owes more to Sophie Kinsella than to Anne Rice.

While Davidson has continued to produce more Undead novels, she has also found the time to launch three other romantic fantasy series featuring 1.) a hybrid mermaid named Fred, 2.) an eccentric family of Alaskan royals, and 3.) a cyborg spy. All are infused with her trademark wit and imagination. In addition, she and her husband, Anthony Alongi, have written the Jennifer Scales series, originally marketed to young adults and re-released as fantasy fiction for all ages. Davidson also remains one of the most popular writers of paranormal romantica; her short stories and novellas appear regularly in anthologies.

Good To Know

Davidson is not the only one in her family to achieve fame. Her mother once broke the world record for target shooting.

Before she devoted her time to chronicling the love lives of vampires and werewolves, Davidson was voted Miss Congeniality in her high school.

Even though Davidson is one of the most popular writers of modern monster fiction, in real life she is actually terrified of the undead. In fact, she is currently holding a contest on her web site asking readers to put together a twelve-step program to help her get over her fear of zombies!

As she writes on her website, Davidson lived a transient life as a young girl. Her father's career in the U.S. Air Force led her to live in such disparate locales as Guam, Mississippi, and North Dakota. As she grew older, her life in the working world was just as restless as her childhood. She tried her hand at everything from waitressing to modeling to editing to a stint as a medical test subject (!) before settling on a career as a bestselling novelist. These days, her life may be a bit more settled, but it has hardly slowed down.

A few fun outtakes from our interview with Davidson

"I'm a former model -- worst job ever, honestly."

"I'm a gigantic sushi hog -- it's pretty much my favorite meal."

"The more terrible and groaningly awful a horror movie is, the more I like it."

"Um, I like bubble baths? Seriously. I know that sounds like something a Playboy Bunny would say, but I really do."

"I like taking my kids to new restaurants and encouraging them to try new dishes -- we did "Dim Sum" just the other day."

a fun urban fantasy at the usual lunatic pace expected from MaryJanice Davidson

After spending less than an hour in frozen July 3015 and a side trip to Hell and a visit with mother dearest Lucifer, Betsy Taylor and her half-sister Laura the Antichrist return to present day St. Paul where they agree they must somehow fix the time line to prevent what they witnessed in the future. Nutso vampire Marc-Thing follows the siblings back from the thirty-first century. Betsy knows she needs to read the Book of the Dead without going insane; thankfully she has a deal with Satan allowing her to peruse the Book in exchange for watching Satanist movies with Laura.

However, her shoes lead her to even crazier scenarios. The strangest being awake in a Chicago morgue as plastic bagged Jane Doe 291. Back at the mansion in St. Paul, Betsy compares notes with Eric and others to understand what is going on as no one is quite like they were before her time traveling ended on a slab. That is until she realizes someone in the future wants Betsy Taylor dead before she can become the powerful Queen of the Vampires.

The magnificent muddled middle book in the time altering miniseries (see Undead and Unfinished for the opening act) is a zany frolic that contains the consistent restraint of self indulged yet caring in her insane way Betsy. The excessive superego with a muted edge as she has seen in her future Betsy has gone too far with her selfishness. Over the top of the Metrodome, fans will relish the second thriller in the changing Taylor landscape as the jocular story line is a fun urban fantasy at the usual lunatic pace expected from MaryJanice Davidson.

What a waste of money and time

Books 1 - 7 or even 8 were funny and energetic. Book 9 lacked something. Book 10 is none of the above and lacks everything including coherency.

    Very disappointed....

I have read all of the Undead books and loved all of them.......with the exception of this one. I loved the cliffhanger at the end of the last one, but this book really did not contribute anything to the series. I was extremely tired of being stuck in Betsy's annoying ramblings that went totally off topic and there were absolutely no interesting developments in this book. It was probaby the most frustrating and pointless book I have read in a long time. Do not waste your $12.99. And I agree with the other person who said the new cover art is horrible.

    Nothing happens and nothing changes

I hated the last book but couldn't abandon the series. I waited a year and had high hopes for this book. Nothing was resolved and nothing even really happens in this book. All the characters that we have grown to love are barely in this book. There was no action or suspense like there once was in previous books. I feel like Betsy has grown into a very unlikeable character and I almost wish this series would just reach a graceful end. Davidson managed to create an amazing series but in the last two books she has ruined its very essence. Time to end it before more harm is done.

    just okay..

I really wanted to like this one. The previous one, I thought, was great because it gave us a good shock at the end. I was honestly getting bored with reading the same thing over and over. This book felt like it was just setting up. It was an extremely quick read and I felt like more could have happened. She wasn't the same funny Betsy and the writing not as witty. Hoping for more with the next one. Pretty much a waste to spend so much on the nook book.

    Very confusing

I have read this entire series and am always looking forward to the next story, however I must say, I found this one to be very confusing. Still love the series, but suggest you read the series from the beginning. Still looking forward to the next one.

    Lame.

I gave it one star b/c I couldn't give zero. I've read every Betsy book. After the disappointment of the last one, I stuck it out for this lastest one b/c MJ said that it would defintely be better and tie things more cohesively. So, I anxiously awaited for it and got it. I want my $12.99 back. Betsy is more brain dead than ever, Sinclair/Tina make brief cameo appearances and Betsy does nothing but whine. It's not even funny, sarcastic whining. Just annoying. There is no plot advancement, no character development, and not even very funny lines. What was once a great series has turned into mindless filler to add another book sale onto MJ's belt. Bah.

    Worst of the series...by far.

I loved the first several Undead books, however they have definitely taken a turn for the worse. I forced myself to continue reading strictly out of loyalty to the series, but think I might call it quits after this one.

    As always, a fun read.

If you're a Betsy fan you MUST read this book. It just wouldn't do to stop following the story now! If you think what happened in the last book was surprising, just wait!

Get this book---You won 't regret it.

I have been a lover of the Betsy Talor series since the beginning and MJD has not let me down yet. Her characters have such great wit and humor, it's impossible not to enjoy their company. I'd take a short trip to hell with them anytime.

    Extremely disappointed

I've read all the books and felt let-down by this one. Betsy is supposed to get smarter and this book was all about her ramblings and not listening/learning anything. It felt as if this book was just written to meet deadline, no real plot, no real character development. I'll read the next one because I was a big fan, but if it turns out just as "fluffy" as the last one I won't continue reading the series.

    Betsy is still worth reading!

I still love Betsy. What happened to loyalty??? Although the last few books haven't been the same style as the beginning of the series, the author did warn us in a forward that this is a trilogy within a series, and to just hold on until the end and the questions will be answered. Knowing that, I have no problem with hanging questions, since there's a book coming up that will answer them!!! This book is entertaining and interesting, giving us information we wouldn't get otherwise about connections between relationships and how they develop and evolve. I'm sure she will build upon them as the books continue. Go Betsy!!!!!

    Ugh! What a letdown!

I have really enjoyed the earlier books in this series and would give it a solid 4 stars. The last book was heading downhill and this book is the final crash and burn. I had to FORCE myself to finish it. So confusing & just plain stupid, I really can't believe the editors let this get through. I am sad to say my reading journey with Betsy is over & done and it didn't end on a high note. I STRONGLY recommend you get this book at the library before spending good money on it-I wish I could get my $$ back (and the time I spent reading it!). Read the early Betsy books & then quit while you're ahead!

    Urg!!!

If books could do belly flops in a giant pool of blah then this one would. Such a let down after I gave the last book in this series 5*'s and a big fat glowing review. It reminds me of a Scooby Do episode were every one is being chased through random doors only to run head first into each other in the hallway. Every page seemed to plop some "Oh and btw...." bit of confusion in a big steaming pile. Still love the series but after such a great turn of events this one lagged and didn't manage to move the story forward at all.
