Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Going to bed is difficult for children to accept. Their imaginations tend to run wild when they are alone in the dark. Cheering away the fright, Bright uses richly descriptive rhymes to make fun of what might be lurking beside the usual debris "under the bed." For the "beasts nibbling crumbs," the "dragon dozing," and even the grizzly bear down there are all "far too busy" or "too lazy to think about you" up in the bed. When the huge, horrible-looking creature there starts calling for his mommy, however, all the creatures run away, for they are afraid of "you!" Rough-hewn paintings of active animals, up close with lots of sharp teeth, are properly comic and hardly scary as they enjoy activities like eating pizza while reclining in a hammock. Our apprehensive hero upside down peers at us under the bed from the front of the jacket, while pairs of eyes stare out of the darkness on the back. Bugs, snakes, and an alligator join the bear and the red-winged dragon in the wild flight from him. This book is amusing reassurance for the fearful. 2004, Good Books, Ages 3 to 6.
—Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal
PreS-In this book about nighttime worries, a rhyming text describes a variety of creatures that live under a little boy's bed, ranging from "bugs- gobbling" and "squabbling" to "a dragon dozing" to a monster "bigger than a stable door,/Horrible, hairy, with warts on his nose,/With knots in his tail, and mold on his toes." Children are assured that all of these beasts are too busy, sleepy, or lazy to bother with them. In fact, the critters are frightened of something inside the bed, and after they run off one by one, readers discover that it is the boy they are afraid of. The amusing illustrations are large and brightly colored. The bugs have huge teeth, horns, spiked tails, and scary expressions but are smaller than a tennis shoe. Cort makes good use of perspective, showing a frightened monster (who sucks his thumb and holds a teddy bear) as very small and insignificant on one spread, while the boy's smiling face engulfs an entire page. The size and placement of the text effectively reflect the emotion and action of the story. This is a good choice for preschoolers worried about sleeping in their own beds. Pair it with Mercer Mayer's There's Something in My Attic (Dial, 1988) or James Howe's There's a Monster under My Bed (Atheneum, 1986) for a funny and fear-free storyhour.-Sheilah Kosco, Rapides Parish Library, Alexandria, LA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Sure, there are lots of things under the bed you'll be sleeping in tonight, but as Bright rhymes it, they're too busy or lazy or sleepy or scared to be bothering you. There are bugs, dragons, an alligator, and snakes, each set on double-paged landscapes designed to take the scare out of them. "Under the bed is a grizzly bear / (Now, don't ask me how he got there), / Rolling and scratching, like grizzlies do, / And far too lazy to think about you." Finally, there's a great green, moldy, warty, hairy, toothy thing-a close-up of his open mouth should give shivers-who's got some fears of his own: you. His wails for his mommy and daddy (when he takes his thumb out of his mouth) prompt a stampede and now there's nobody under the bed. For all of Bright's vivid imagery and Cort's grand detonations of color as he goes about depicting this cockamamie bestiary, this is a very soothing affair, especially suitable for bedtime reading. My Children's Favorite

My children have has this book for several years (they are 9, 8, and 2) and this is a family favorite! Even before the "big kids" could read, they could re-tell the rhyming story "Under the bed is a smelly shoe . . . "

My 9 year-old daughter and I went to my sister-in-law's baby shower where guests were asked to bring a favorite book for the baby. My daughter choose this one for her cousin-to-be.

I have read it as the "Parent Reader" in each child's class. My kids love the book! Our home copy is now torn and taped, but still a family favorite.
