Overview

If one reads the interesting though puzzling lyrics of "It's a Riddle," it's quite amazing that Stephen Clair relays them as well as he does. The lyrics, as the title suggests, are likewise a riddle, with lines like "On the surface there's a woman who wants to be something/Cos who she is is so uncertain." It almost seems sloppily written, but Clair shows a knack for slurring the lyric together as though it were meant to be. Of course, both the lyrical content (puzzling and presumably deep) and vocal (part Dylan) let one know that Clair is a singer/songwriter. Clair uses plenty of irony and humor to deliver his song poems, and relies on both quiet acoustic and full electric settings to put them across. Sometimes, as on "Your Town," one's reminded a bit of Robert Earl Keen. Clair delivers this off-center song in an off the cuff manner, asking a series of questions from the point of view of a stranger in a new town. This works equally well on "Tomorrow's Another Day," though it's difficult to tell how much of the lyric is ironic. On one level, it seems to be an ode to turning one's back on the rat race; on another, it seems to criticize those who ignore the world outside (unless it isn't supposed to be ironic). For fans of literate singer/songwriters who balance the weight of the world with a bit of humor, Clair's Under the Bed should fit the bill.
