    One of my favorite punk rock bands in the '80's

    Unlike the Dead Kennedy's--which I also liked--these guys can sing (on tune).

    Fully unto their own

    "Big Black" was X's third album and is as good of a cross over record as has ever been made. Too smart to be metal, too cool to be pop, too hip to be punk; And too bad more people didn't realize how fine a rock and roll album this recording actually is. What makes this band so interesting is their total lack of "rock star" pretensions, the professionalism of their arrangements and playing, and the clearly superior lyrics to anything being done in this genre. The album has an authenticity about it that you'd be hard pressed to match. Even with twenty plus years gone since its release "Big Black" is as astounding now as it was then. It is far and away one of the best recordings of the 80's by an American band, and though not too many folks knew it, there was a lot of interesting things being done before alternative got "cool".
