Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Cottrell (anesthesiology, SUNY Health Science Ctr. at Brooklyn) and medical writer Golden have written an excellent book about anesthesia for anyone who is going to have surgery. Part 1 covers basic information about anesthesia, anesthesiologists, and the questions that patients should ask before they receive it. In Part 2, the authors discuss anesthesia for different age groups and surgery for different medical conditions and present information about the anesthesiologist's role in chronic pain management. Throughout each section are patients' stories. There are also clear definitions of medical terms and black-and-white drawings, some of which could have used more detail. For instance, Figure 16 of a cystoscopy features a physician with no surgical mask and no head covering, and the patient in the drawing has no head covering. These are minor points, however. This unique book about a misunderstood topic should be included in all consumer health collections. Marge Kars, Bronson Methodist Hosp., Kalamazoo, MI Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
