Overview

Compilation albums of R&B singles from the 60's and 70's usually contain either familiar hits, or recordings so obscure that nobody has heard of them. The Underground Oldies collections are different. While rare and little known, these tunes got played on local radio stations, and are slicker and better produced than the rare birds you find on most Northern Soul collections. Volume Three covers the same fertile ground as the first two. For many, Linda Jones' operatic "That's When I'll Stop Loving You" defines soul, and it maybe her most breathtaking performance. "One Life To Live" is a fine early release by the Manhattans featuring their original lead, George Smith. The Ethics' "Farewell" featuring Ron Tyson is sweet Philly magic. "Friends By Day (Lovers By Night)" by the Whatnauts is an early example of the blowing into the microphone technique that Luther Vandross uses to wow audiences. Also on board are cuts from Barbara Mason, Brenton Wood, the Variations, Mike & the Sensations, and Vivian Copeland. Sixteen substantive tracks for sweet soul lovers.
