Underground Train

Overview

Rrrruuuummm. Whoooosshh. That's the sound the underground train makes as it rushes under the city streets. Above ground, traffic stops, and sparrows hop, lions in the zoo snooze, and the skipping feet of girls leap neat through jump ropes. Underground, the bright train glides, taking a little girl to visit her Nana. Award-winning

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
On the surface, this is just a simple story of a little girl taking a trip to visit her grandmother, but underneath there is so much more. Readers take a trip on the Metro-an underground train that goes "Rrruuummm. Whoooosshh." The rhythm, pace, and even the placement of the poetic text mimic the movement and sounds of the train. While our travelers are deep underneath the city, the streets above teem with activity. The parallel stories converge when the travelers arrive at their stop and emerge above ground to join up with Nana. Cat Bowman Smith's lively and amusing watercolors accurately capture the Washington Metro and all of the excitement of the little girl's trip.
School Library Journal
PreS-K--A little girl and her mother take a trip on the Washington, DC, metro to meet Nana in the park. Sporting a jaunty red beret, this eager preschooler picks an orange seat and settles down to watch "the tunnel blurring by like a long, black night." As the train rushes underground ("Rrrruuuummm. Whoooosshh"), readers get to see what's "above the train, above my head." The White House, the Capitol, various familiar monuments, and the zoo are a few of the sights along the way. Before long, the conductor announces the awaited stop and Nana is there to greet mother and daughter. Although the rhythmic language isn't consistently successful--be prepared to wonder if you've missed a beat--the appeal of the journey never falters. Lighthearted watercolor illustrations capture the little traveler's infectious curiosity as well as the hustle and bustle of the crowded urban streets. While the often busy layout makes this book difficult to share with groups, individual children and adults will no doubt enjoy taking this bright and cheery train ride together.--Alicia Eames, New York City Public Schools
