Meet the Author

Dan DeWitt has been writing fiction for what seems like forever. He's published a handful of short stories online; all but one of the ezines are defunct, but he's trying to not take that personally. He has recently completed a short-story collection UNDERNEATH, which will be published in June. In July, his full-length zombie thriller ORPHEUS will hit the shelves. After that, he hopes to be much, much busier.

    Great

It's always interesting to see how stories affect people differently, as evidenced by this books reviews. I think that 8 of the 10 shorts hit the mark while the 2 I left out; raved about by others. The real point is this: a good author doesn't have to hit the target every time, he just has to leave you in fear once.

    So close, yet so far

This is certainly an interesting set of short stories, that cannot be denied. Unfortunately the majority of stories have obvious flaws that could have been easily taken out, such as in a first person story suddenly switching to third in the same sentence.

The first story, Hope was interesting and would have been fantastic if the ending hadn't been so open ended. The story needed to have an open ending or it wouldn't have been the same, but in it's current form the ending is far to open and leaves the reader wondering what they just read and why.

One Simple Wish is the best one not only for content, but also in writing style. Interesting, suspenseful and heartwarming this one covers it all. I wish that all of the stories in this collection were of this caliber.

Whatever your preference is in narration style, rest assured that there is a healthy mix of both first person and third person narration. While I usually enjoy first person narration, I found that the stories ran together in this collection simply because every time a first person story took the stage it sounded like it was being told by the same character, even though it was not. After a while reading them became a drag, despite the fact that some of them had very interesting concepts.

While I think that DeWitt has a lot of potential, I think that he could take some more time in editing and fine tuning his stories. I would love to see him take these stories, work on them and re-release them. I think that the stories would be much more enjoyable afterwards.

    Crazy is right!! Jmm 44

The first few very short stories are hard to believe the author could come up with such macabre stories about babies & young children! The last one is longer but i kept waiting for the "story" to get better!

    Father/Daughter Dance by Dan DeWit

A classy supernatural device with real feeling; not soggy or sloppy, also excellent grammar & punctuation

    Crazy

Love short stories, because i am an avaid reader and find i can not quit reading til the end. While many of these stories left you to use your own imagination, i am looking forward to Orpheus. That had me locked and i need to see where it is headed.

    Highly recommend

The stories were really good, but they could use some editing. Other than that, definitely worth the read.

    Just a thank you...

I will start by saying: i havnt read this book yet i just wanted to thank a person who posted on sep. 12, i really love it when reviewers rate with such strong and passionate words. Especially when a majority of the posts are " It sucked" or" i really liked it" i want the reason and this person did a wonderful job they went beyond the average review. They gave descriptive words that drew me into...well a review. They have convinced me to read this compilation and i am sure i dont need to read anymore reviews. Thank you

    more from this reviewer

    Wonderful

I really liked these stories. The first few might leave you going, "huh?", but as you start to get into the rest of the book they get SO much better. I REALLY liked the Sick Day stories.

Good, as far as short stories go :)

Well worth reading. I like his style and ability to put scenes together that almost brings you into the story with the characters. Look forward to reading Orpheus...by reading the preview of it at the end of this book, I'm sure I'll be getting that one too. Good read..5 stars!

The end is just the begining

These tales from underneath will take hold of you like a fist from the grave and pull you in. One minute the author is leading you down a lonely highway as he delicately tip toes through the mind of the insane and gently pulls the reader along, sometimes by the heartstrings and at other times by the throat. A few stories later, fantastical creatures from hell take hold of the protagonist and reader and drag them off to the great beyond. Each story bends perception and reality and it is left to the reader to decide what is real and what is imagined. In his horror there is compassion and that makes the experience all the more real and terrifying. if you enjoyed tales from the crypt this book will delight you as it did me.
