Overview

This recording by a trio led by bassist Dominic Duval is simply another example of the remarkable strengths of this very special performer. Joined by Joe McPhee on soprano and tenor saxophones and John Heward on drums and kalimba, Duval steers the trio on 12 separate "Undersounds," which are generally short (mostly under four minutes each) free improvisations. As implied in the title, there is a quietness to much of it, though hardly a lack of intensity. Heward is a key figure, his carefully constructed prodding kicks gently urging on his compatriots. Duval's bass, as usual, plays at least a role equal to those of the sax and drums, and his distorted squeaky lines weave in and out with confident alacrity. Joe McPhee is as effective as ever, his saxophones stunning with their creative breadth. McPhee's unique ability to swing, stretch, and instantaneously compose at virtually any tempo or level of dynamics marks him as a giant on his horns, something that is clearly evident throughout this recording. As a group, Duval, Heward, and McPhee share a common vision that clicks repeatedly here, and should mark this as an important part of the discography of each.
