Overview

In his sixth book, renowned photographer, popular instructor, and best-selling author Bryan Peterson challenges and inspires us to see close-up photography in new ways when we view it through his eyes. You’ve seen the dewdrops, but what about dewdrops on a bird’s wing or raindrops on a car windshield? You’ve seen the bumblebees on vibrant flowers, but what about the fluid edge of just one petal or the colorful rusting metal at industrial sites? Even when Peterson does capture the more traditional subjects, it's done in untraditional ways–and often with minimal specialized equipment! Most important, he moves beyond the commonplace to inspire new ways of getting close, using your lenses, and discovering unconventional subjects.

Bryan Peterson writes a classic to stand alongside "Understanding Exposure"

Bryan Peterson writes a classic to stand alongside "Understanding Exposure". That earlier work is THE book that belongs in every photographer's bookcase, and while this book is not quite up those lofty standards, compared to just about any other book on the subject it is a must-have. Peterson does not dwell extensively on technique here, rather he shows a bunch of different approaches to close-ups (wide-angled, reversed lens, macro, close-up diopter, etc.) and then shows how you can creatively use them. In the end the book is more about inspiration than a how-to guide, but it is the desire he ignites in the reader that makes this such a special book.

An excellent book that surprises, entertains and educates.

This is an outstanding book. The information is clear, very much right on point and prepares you to jump into close-up photography. And it is important to note that it covers both macro and close up, and teaches the difference.

Also, it is no coffee table book, but that's good. Lots of good pictures, but they are more about opening your mind on the topic, not just beauty shots for their own sake. Some very creative shots here.

One of the best photo books I've read.

    Spark your Passion for Photography

Macro/Close-up subjects are everywhere and are not weather dependent. This book like all of Peterson's texts is well written, full of examples and ideas, and simply beautiful to look at. If you are serious about photography get this book and all of his texts. You will find a new passion through improved skills and creative techniques!
